Just picked up an appleby 10 ft. jonboat and was wondering if anyone had any insight as to what size trolling motor i could use on it rather then a small out board which would severeley limit weight capacity which tops out at 245#
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Actually, a 3-4 hp Johnson or Evinrude would weigh less than the trolling motor and battery. Quite a bit less, actually. It would also shove your little jon boat along pretty briskly.

They weigh about 30 lb.

Yup, I agree with CAT, a small outboard will be lighter and move the boat faster. But, do you want/need an outboard or just going to use a troller for putting around a lake?

A 30# trolling motor will work fine on that small boat. If you get one with electronic technology (IE: Motorguide Varimax) the battery will last for a looong time,,, compared to old technology (inexpensive) 1-5 speed trolling motors, but it's going to be spendy.

yep just picked it up to put around on the river and bays on Oneida Lake, thought an electris trolling motor with 30#thrust would do it.Also want to be able to use it on the Salmon river, no whitewater only calmer areas of the river. Thanks for the input

Keep in mind....trolling motor requires a good size battery and that is where a bunch of weight is............. You might find a small under 6 hp motor cheap on craigs list or ebay. If you intend on going new ....look at a trolling motor with new technology.

I would be worried with only a troller for propulsion, especially in a river, with a gas motor you can tell exactly how much go you have left but a battery could suprise you and laeve you stranded.

Concure with the others, a good battery will weigh in at 60-80lbs with the troller being another 30ish adn a new troller worth having is in the $300-$500 range, you could pick up a small outboard for less than that.
