Re: When buying a used boat

Hours alone means nothing. 800 hrs on a motor that goes 3200 to 3600 rpm with the boat up on step could be perfect engines (depending on preventive maintenance) as compared to an engine run at max WOT (especially overpropped) which will mean that it's a surprise it still works.

Drives! Alpha's and a 5.9 diesel. Not a snow balls chance in .............

Re: When buying a used boat

if properly maintained, freshwater use and freshwater cooled the engines just go.
the drives are a weak link but then again with proper mint they go and go.
try to get all the maint records. make sure the drives always have had the merc HP gear lube or at least a GL-5 synthetic.
when you have the mechanical survey done, pay to have the drives pulled, the input yoke seal inspected for leaks and engine alignment.
your also gonna want to know when the last cooling system maint was performed.

The first thing i would do is get a compression test done on the engines. If they are ok,then i would get the survey done.I just had compression test done on a 31 formula with twin 454's for $250.The boat is 8 years old and looks brand new,but 2 cylinders had low compression on the port engine.
Saved me the money for a survey.

good luck
