I have a laptop computer and was wondering what I needed to be able to use it through my cell phone?
A special cell phone or a adapter to hook from my cell phone to my laptop.

SBN, you will need a cellular PC card modem and a cable that will fit your phone. Here is an example of a kit for a Motorola Startac.
Your cell company can probaly help you out. Up until recently, the speed was horrible. It can still be horrible in some areas.

Startac wireless kit

Thanks Scoop. Thats what I needed to know. I would just use it to gather my e-mails while I was away from the house.

Re: 1 More puter question

What kind of speed are you talking about scoop? Is it extremely slow like 1 Kbs or even slower? I always wanted to get a setup for my wife's laptop. I live on the coast in Mississippi,so how could I find out what the "real" speed of the networks would be down here? would I have to remove my current modem and if so would the new cellular modem work on normal phone lines when needed? any info welcome.

Re: 1 More puter question

I wish I could say what it is now. I think it depends ont he network. Until all the cell companies implement Generation 3 (G3) technology, it will still be fairly slow. The modem that is shown in the picture of the kit is a 56kbps. That is the same speed as my line at home. Just a few years ago, the speed was 16kbps which was less than half as fast as a regular modem. For just email, a blackberry device is probably best. the services work across the US and you get you email only.

Most likely you would not have to remove your other modem. Just use the operating system to configure the modem ports. If you are using 98, actually getting the hardware to listen to the software can be frustrating. Using W2K or Win XP it is easy.

I have not used nor configured any of these devices for anyone yet. Most of my clients went with a blackberry since it was quicker and smaller.

Blackberry

Re: 1 More puter question

I had never seen them neither. Seems kinda neat. I guess you would have to have another ISP though.
I would kinda like to keep mine if I could.
I wonder if you can configure them or if they have a set isp?

What does that do?
It just goes in my card port or do I have to have a special port for it?

Re: 1 More puter question

I currently have a startac connected to my laptop for use when I am on the road. You need to make sure your phone is even capable of being used as a modem a lot of phones aren't. My speed is usually around 14k which isin't the best but better than nothing. Also it's great when taking trips in the car. Mine also can send and recieve faxes which is great. :D

Re: 1 More puter question

thanks for the info trollhole. I would probably have to get a new phone as I still use the generic nokia. 14k would be fine for email. I may go check with my cell phone provider and find out data rates, etc. In no hurry though.... it will only get better with time and I am in no real need at the moment.

You all might consider pocketmail.com. They've been around a few years and they work great. Mom, aunt, and friend have them as they want to keep in touch on the road.

They are about $99, and $10/month.
Very east to use, no extra frills. Type your email, hold up to any phone, push button, it dials a tollfree number, sends and receives your mail, and hangs up. Takes about 35 seconds.

A very easy and convenient option, but you need a regular phone to use it.

convenience = $
for $10/mo. I can use about 200 min. long distance
SBN, go to their website for info. seems like
you won't need a "special" port to me, but please check it out 4 yourself. I have no experience with them, but am curious also.
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: 1 More puter question

duckcommander, right now I have my laptop configured the same way my desktop is and that is peoplepc, so I can not be online at the same time with both of them but if I can use something to go wireless with them it would not matter cause I would not be on both at the same time anyway. :D
