Good evening,

I have a 2008 5hp Honda that was stored flat but on the wrong side. As a consequence, engine oil flooded the cylinder, etc. I pulled the spark plug out and drained as much oil as possible and replaced with a new spark plug. I can now pull the starter but it still won?t start.

What steps should I take next to amend this problem?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Regards,

Sounds like you're on the right track.

Usual fix for that is to remove the plug, operate the starter several times to expel oil, refill the crankcase to correct level, reinstall new plug, and crank a lot until it fires and the excess oil in the cylinder(s) is burned out. Then chew out whoever laid it down wrong ;)

You may have a lot of wet oil fouling on the new plug.

I'd take it from the top again and see what happens.

You might want to pull the rope a few times real hard with the plug removed in order to expel excess oil in chamber. A small blast of carb cleaner in the cylinder wouldn't hurt.

Place engine on vertical stand or on boat transom, remove plug, squeeze pure gasoline in cylinder, pul rope several times as to wash completely oiled cylinder, repeat if needed. Soak plug tip in thinner, blow dry completely, put back on engine. Try again, good luck.

Note: As a precaution, disconnect kill cord before pulling rope to wash cylinder or gas fumes could ignite.

Thanks for the helpful tips folks. I will get on it again this weekend.

PVANV,

It is an elderly gentleman who did this so I couldn't possibly "chew him out" out of respect for him as an elder. 8^)

In that case, you will need to put your best "respect your elders" mode into action. Educate him gently. Once he understands the "why", he'll abide by the "how"...

The carb was fouled with oil as well. Once the carb was drained out, it started after one pull and purred like a cat!

Thanks for all your help.
