Good morning and hello everyone.

I am currently chasing down alarm issues. On this motor per the book it says its either low oil or overheat. It is the steady beep tone. I have done the following so far:

Pulled the lower unit to inspect the impeller and found that a very shoddy job was performed in installing the face seal on the housing. It was split on one side, and was clearly too small for the drive shaft, and leads me to believe that the shop who serviced it, knew they had the wrong one and "Made" it fit. Should I change the impeller as well? It is in great shape (barely 5 hours of run time) but it does look a little larger than what I would think is normal. To me it has too much of an S shape to it.

I pulled the thermostat, which may have been a good call. It looked pretty ugly and frail.

I pulled each of the three spark plugs, they are the correct ones, however they do show signs of fouling. Am not sure what is causing that? Carb sucking oil?

I replaced my fuel line/bulb with one that is advertised better protection/resistance for ethanol gas. I also use ethanol treatments when I cant use pure gas.

On the water after doing the above, I still get the alarm. At first it was at 5000-5400 rpm after 5-10min idle at no greater than 1800rpm. After that it would happen within the 4000 range. Keeping it below 3600 seems to prevent the alarms. I disconnected the OT sensor, and the very loud alarm ceased. But I can still hear the weak sounding tone from the console.

Also observed that when running the engine, idle or more, I see water coming out from where the steering knuckle enters the engine? I think that's what its called. Is that normal?

I have not disconnected the oil temp yet, ran out of daylight yesterday. I plan to do that today. I feel like I am on the right path and having some mechanical knowledge thanks to my career, I have more confidence in doing things myself rather than spending hundreds or more at a shop.

After running full throttle on first launch for a few minutes, I get the steady tone. If I kill the engine and wait approx. 20 seconds, the alarm resets, and I can run the engine until I hit around 3600+ RPM. Keeping it under 3600 definitely prevents the alarm. The water from the weep hole runs a few degrees warmer than the river/lake. It is no where near 120+ degrees.

Much obliged for any help that can be directed this way.

All in all, I am in it for $70 currently. 7 for the seal, 24 for the thermostat, and 40 for the fuel line.
Which is perhaps much better than what I was quoted before. $100 for the boat to get looked at, $150 for them to troubleshoot on the water, then whatever ungodly amount for parts and hourly labor.

Again, thanks for any help and thanks for the read!

Re: 07 Merc 90 ELPTO 2 Stroke alarms & RPM

Quick update that came to me a little late.

Before I redeployed, my wife was kind enough to take the boat to the shop for servicing. When I took the boat out the first time, this alarm went off after idling for 5-10 minutes. I double checked the book which lead me to overheat or oil level. Anyway, I reached down to check for obstructions around the water inlet (engine off of course). I did have a semi weak stream from the weep hole. I attributed it to possibly being a small clog in the water line. After getting out of the marina, I took it full throttle, and the engine responded appropriately. Rather than going WOT, I increased in three stages. Weep hole was giving a strong stream so I thought nothing of it. At WOT, the engine would lose considerable power taking me from 42mph to about 15mph. I thought that it could be some old gas in the tank, but wife insists she put Sta-Bil in it. The power loss continued throughout the day, so I made an effort to burn off as much of that gas as I could before filling it back up.
I did not get any alarm the remainder of the first day out.

I topped off about 18 gallons of gas, (24 gal cap). The next time the boat went out, (a week later) for a weekend camping trip, and that's when the alarm became continuous.

I have also tried throttling down to different RPMs to see if the alarm would quit. It does not. The temp sensor still remains disconnected, hoping this weekend provides a chance to take the boat on the water and test my oil sensor and hopefully it is just the temp sensor, not an oil issue or a wiring issue.

Thanks again for reading.
