I thought it was a two stroke as they have the plan white Mercury decals on the cowling and not like the fancy new cowlings. It doesnt bother me at all, I was just surprised to find it was a 4strk.
anyway, its done low but steady kms and servicing up to now. Somewhere around 200.

I come from yamaha two stroke 3cyl land where I have lived happily knowing the ins and outs servicing to service schedule. One of my pet peeves is people who think DIY servicing is just the impeller, gear oil, filters etc and miss what the schedule says ie replacing oil pump tubes, then blame it all on Oil Pumps then ruin a good engine by thinking bypassing the pump will be all needed for converted two stroke, missing out on the engine lubricating at different ratious per rpm etc. Oh I just had to ring out my panties lol ;-p

anyway, how hard is it to get a toslink and the software for the ECU on 4 stroke? I presume servicing to schedule will teach me what Im ignorant too from two strokes?

I also read the only diff between the 50 and 60 is a new ECU chip and a couple other parts/small changes? If so sounds like a fun and to be honest, very useful challenge as I plan to carry a fair few spearos with me. I presume it would need repropping?

Thanks for the knowledge all.

Unfortunately…many are of the thinking that this era of 4 stroke…are quite disappointing in general. In performance, appearance, appeal and loads else. Very dull and heavy things back then.

yeh, none of that worries me much, its eiher i stick with whats on the boat or I put a 60hp Yammy 2 stroke, you make it sound the two stroke will have better fuel economy than this DOG of a 4 stroke.

They sure arent pretty but I didnt realis they are worse fuel economy than 2 stroke.

anbody know what else I need to upgrade to 60hp? Ive read couple basic threads on it.. ECU is about $500, the limiter needs removing. Not sure if they need reprop?

It will probably be better on fuel rpm for rpm comparison. But it won’t come close to the performance of a 60 yam 2 stroke. The yam may even match it for consumption at cruising speeds, with it likely not working as hard. Who knows. Also need to watch out for timing belt failure. They also like to dilute the oil with fuel occasionally. Go through spark plugs often sometimes too.
Admittedly I’ve never owned one from this era…but known plenty of boats with them. I’d rather have a 2 stroke, given the option. Should budget not be an option though…the newer merc 4 strokes are a different ball game for sure. Amazing things

they essentially a yamaha. timing is a chain, there will be no bent rods. they worked with yamaha on them is my understanding. They are known as Merc f50/60. Same as the yamaha, nearly identical parts needed to upgrade it to a f60.

Im extremely familiar with 3cyl two stroke yams. I would highly doubt consumption of a 60 would be close. No doubt hole shot (which is the 3ycls best attribute) is better and Id imagine they are much quicker. Ive had a tiller 60 on a fifteen foot rib with about one inch of glasss deadrise in the water as I just WOT'd on a milk pond sea. Mind you Ive flipped myself out of the boat doing so as well, thank the engineer who invented kill swtch/cords lol

Im not looking for performance from this, my first four stroke, dont make me hate four strokes before ive ownd one. Im just hoping for the data I have from a very similar setup. We still sell two strokes here, but four strokes are just taking over. This is on fifteen foot tinny, mine is sixteen foot ally runabout,

2.1kts (3.9kmh) @ 750rpm (trolling) – 0.7lt/h

12.9kts (24.0kmh) @ 3300rpm (clean plane) – 5.9lt/h

18.0kts (33.4kmh) @ 4000rpm (cruise) – 7.3lt/h

25.9kts (48.0kmh) @ 5000rpm (max cruise) – 10.6lt/h

30.7kts (56.9kmh) @ 5800rpm (WOT) – 17.5lt/h

No worries. Sounds like you’ve nave your mind up. Fill your boots. Was just an opinion, with the thinking that you were asking for one. I’m a 2 stroke man. Smears have been. But was lucky enough to get a bost with a newer merc from 2016 on the back. 4 stroke. What a machine it is, compared to the early efforts…and compared to its equivalent 2 stroke from old. Wipe the floor with it…surprisingly

like i was saying, im able to service all the yamaha 3cyls to total strip down and back. I love my two strokes. I know what I will be missing. But when you dont need torque or speed, purely fishing, the used boat comes with the merc f50 so Im just gonna try it out. Not hard to replace. But the boat doesnt suit a 90 yam two etc anyway, not the size or deep V for it. Cheers

It is around this 50hp mark though they only just start to make sense imo over a 3cyl two str. Really its 70hp up where it becomes very obvious. They big and heavy for their output no doubt. The noise factor is genuine though. I actually thought it was a two stroke on the boat before buying haha. They dont say much decals wise these earlier models.

I enjoyed my Etec 40 until the flappn plastic around the bolt holes cracked each connector tab off on the leg cowling, yet bombardier wouldnt let me import replacement from the US where this mere plastic cost $350 per side, some costing a whopping $1500 localy even though currency wise they should only mark up to $650. So not only did they know about the fault, they refused to make it fairly affordable to fix. They Evi/Johny lost a LOT of customers over this right royal stuff up.
The reality is why do I need any other brand other than Yamaha if I can choose it. These F50 Merc yammy copies should hopefully be pretty good too.

Likely decent enough thing.
Yeah. Can’t beat a 2 stroke Yamaha really. I’ve a collection of the smaller models in the garage. Can’t stop buying them for no good reason of use either !! Even have two 8hp models the same ! Getting to be worth serious money in value over here at least.

Not here as you can still buy new up to 50hp. I loved my 50hp tiller gear shift yammy 3cyl, i over serviced it haha.

My pet peave is DIY servicers who dont service to schedule and then when an oil pump tube splits due to age, they blame self oiling not the fact they didnt service it, then convert to premix fuel, taking out the oil pump, which is ultra dodgy as the engine is designed to deliver oil in the correct ratio per rpm, which ends up causing fouled plugs all the way to more sinister.
I just wish people who are considering DIY service are told thats great but make sure you buy a service manual and stick to the schedule.
