Hello again. Recently purchased an 07 MFS9.8A3EFL (I think EFL is correct, long leg, electric start with charger) with apparently 5 hrs on it. I believe it sat for 1 1/2 yrs on his sail boat, most likely in the down position due to the corrosion on the lower leg and the anode being pretty much gone. The last 1 1/2 yrs it's sat in his garage.

It ran great in his garage and it runs well when I started it at my place but I now realize I do not have any water coming out of the pee hole. I'm *hoping* no damage has been done.

When the motor was running there was a stream of air coming out of the pee hole. Does this indicate/eliminate any problems? I have used a wire to poke all of the lower leg intake holes, when I took off the hose from the pee hole to the motor I could easily blow air "downstream". I inserted a wire about 1" into the motor until it stopped. Didn't force it as wasn't sure if I had just hit a 90 degree turn or if I could damage something.

I was going to drop the lower leg off however I wasn't able to get out the 2 pins on the brass coupler and I believe these need to be removed for the leg to drop? The pins are probably somewhat corroded in place and not sure if there is a trick to get them out. Any suggestions? I didn't want to use too much force and risk bending the shift linkage due to the flex it has.

I'm trying to determine if I want to tackle my 1st time maintenance myself or have a shop have them do it the 1st time around for me (I'm sure I could manage, don't have outboard experience though). I also don't have the manual either, would get one if I continue with maintenance myself.

It's clear from the forum the impeller and water pump should be replaced. What about the leg oil? Any other lower leg issues you would suggest to change? Any particular seals/gaskets? Due to a previous bad experience (sorry to you dealers/mechanics!) I'm not really wanting to take it in to a shop and say "do what needs to be done". Sometimes this means do more than is needed and bill me! I would like to know exactly what I should be having done.

I believe the nearest dealer is 1 hour away, if I take the motor in locally will any service centre be able to obtain the parts? We have a mercury shop, a yamaha/evinrude shop, plus a couple of general marine mechanical shops in town.

Thanks in advance for any help/advise.

Yes, you are headed in the correct direction. The motor probably was run out of the water, cooking the water pump. BTW, The air stream coming out of the pee tube is actually exhaust from the exhaust housing, backing up because there isn't any water to displace it. Don't run like that, as you will definitely overheat.

You can get a wp kit from any dealer, including me. That will include the impeller, and also the cup and plate, which may well be worn/cooked at this point. Hopefully you don't need an upper pump housing. If the motor ran for too long, overheating the impeller could have melted the housing. You will know more once you have the LU down and the pump apart.

The 3mm stainless roll pins can be driven out with a small punch. You only need to drive out the lower pin. Use a tapping motion with a light hammer, and you should be OK. New pins are available. Be sure you use SS pins, or you may end up replacing the brass coupling as well the next time. If you don't have an appropriate punch, Tohatsu America sells a special one for the job, which we use in our shop all the time:

345722270M TOOL, SPRING PIN (REMOVAL), 3mm $14.97

I would recommend a Factory service manual (available from any dealer, including me) if you want to do your own work. At 10 hours, you will want to change oil and LU lube. Do not overfill the crankcase -- not even a drop. On new motors, we fill them half way on the dipstick (only) as they will likely "make oil".

If you had a bad dealer experience, try a different dealer.

You can find authorized dealers in your area by submitting your zip code at http://www.tohatsu.com/dealersearch/index.html
