Read the owner manual, changed the lower oil and engine oil. Got the impeller kit and replaced with lots of trouble. Here are the 2 major ones:

1. Shift to F/N/R difficult to sync.
2. No water coming out of the taletell. Engine overheated and shut down.

The installation of the rubber impeller is extremely straight forward. I don't see how I could possible miss any thing. Could it not be spinning due to "incorrect" alignment? I noticed there was a small pin about 1/2 inch left from the kit, could it be for the small vertical groove inside the impeller? I did not find it anywhere during the disassembly.

I went ahead and ordered the service manual for $40 as suggested by Tohatsu Guru. It should be here this week. I however suspected that as with other manuals I bought in the past, it never really helps especially in situations like this.

The little pin is what holds the impeller to the drive shaft. No pin, no impeller turning and you have your very own George Foreman Grill. I would like mine medium rare please.

Re: 06 Tohatsu 4HP No water after impeller change

Guru,

The rubber impeller only has a vertical groove looking straight into the stainless steel cup from the top. The shaft doesn't have any hole or slot to at least lock in the pin. Should I push the pin straight down from the top (into the groove) where it would reside vertically between the rubber material and the metal shaft? If that is the case, friction is the only thing that holds the pin in place which doesn't seem to be very secured.

The book still hasn't arrived. Does it have any illustration of pin positioning? I just wanted to use the boat this weekend so I may have to try inserting the pin again without the book. Help please.

The pin locks the impeller to the shaft by friction which has worked without an issue for over 25 years. There is only one possible way to insert the pin...

Guru,

Would the service manual show you how to reinstall and align the pin? If it does, I better wait for the manual to arrive.

What about synchronizing Forward/Neutral/Reverse? I hope the procedure is outlined in there.

There is not anything to realign on the impeller pin. You simply slide the impeller down over the shaft and insert the pin into the groove. The shift is extemely easy to adjust. Shove the lower unit up into the motor leg and tighten the bolt that hold the shift rods together. Just make sure that the shift handle position matches whatever setting you are in on the lower unit. IE if the the lower unit is in neutral put the handle in neutral.

Tohatsu Guru,

Well, the book finally came which I did order from InternetOutboard.com. I tried attaching a PDF file using this site but the file size exceeded the allowable limit.

I will send you (via your website) a diagram which I extracted directly from the book and modified with questions. Please verify and comment. I will start disassembling tomorrow.

Thanks,

Your looking for a complicated procedure where there isn't one. It's really just as easy as previously described:)

I checked on your email, but Carol already took care of it.
