I've not bought a manual on my '05 5.0GXi single prop as none of them cover the newer dates. I did the full winterizing per what I've found on this site, but I'm not sure what is involved in lubing the gimbal bearing. I see the zerk fitting on the starboard side of the outdrive mount but what grease do I use and can/should this be done with everything assembled?

Thanks for the help! I'm on the lookout for an updated shop manual that covers my setup.

Scott

Re: '05 Volvo Gimbal Grease

Here is from the newest Volvo SX service manual.
Lubricate gimbal bearing with EP/Wheel Bearing Grease or equivalent. Apply grease until all old grease has been removed and
new grease appears.
Personally I've been using the Mercruiser Ujoing and Gimbal Bearing grease. (That is what it's called). You can find it at any Mercury/Mercruiser dealer.

The bearing is identical to the Merc gimbal bearing. Just a different box.

Is removing the outdrive required to remove the old grease or can it be done assembled?

Thanks,
Scott

Yes, and the drive has to be removed. It also needs to be removed to inspect the gimbal bearing and ujoints, check the alignment, check for water or oil in the bellows and lubing the coupler splines. This should be done at least once a year.

Hey, if you've got a 2005 engine, check out ALL the warranty info. Wouldn't touch anything until I saw all the warranty terms and conditions.
