05 nissan 9.8 4 strk kicker

i just bought a 9.8 4 stroke ob for a kicker having some problems starting other day think i figured out why the shift lever i think is sticking dosent go into reverse until after switcher the lever back and forth thru nutral and foward seem as the engine is getting stuck between gears ? but u can still pull the starting cord but will not turn over after u mess with it and it goes into reverse ok it starts on first pull is there anything i can do or has anyone had the same problems?? plz any help

The engine is not designed to be shifted into gear unless it is running. Serious damage may result by shifting it into forward or reverse while it is not running. It is possible that the shift linkage may be out of adjustment....but you would be the only one that I have ever heard of on that model. Your best bet would be to take it into the closest authorized dealer to be checked out under warranty.
