I just picked up a nice Lund with the Yamaha listed above. My question. Is it safe to run this motor full throttle for an extended period of time? Say 15 to 30 minutes? Do these big 4-strokes had a "red line" as far as RPMs are considered, or is it not a problem? With the old 50hp merc 2-stroke I had I used to run that full throttle all the time, never was an issue. Thanks in advance for the input.

Re: 04 Yam 150hp 4-stroke RPM question

If your boat is set up right, has the right prop, then you should be able to run all day at the WOT maximum RPM's with no problem. Your motor's specified RPM range is 5000 to 6000RPM's, so anything near or slightly above won't hurt it. My 115 2 stroke Yamaha's range was 4500 to 5500RPM's, but I used to trim it out for 5800RPM's and it never hurt it. What's a lot worse for the motors is having the wrong prop and the motor can't reach normal maximum RPM's, puts a real stress on the motor. Good Luck!

When I did have it opened up the RPMs were about 5500, so from what you've said it should be fine. Thanks again.
