My buddy brought his boat by my house the other day, wanting me to put a lower unit on it when he got a new one.

He took it out for the first time this year on Sunday. When he pushed it off the trailer he said it wouldn't go anywhere, Didn't bang/click or anything, Just wouldn;t move forwards or reverse.

I didn't get a picture, but i will do my best to explain with another picture.

Its busted where the red lines are, And the blue line is that hub assembly moved out. Sorta like it spit that hub out. I can hold all that stuff against the lowering like it would have been bolted on and in forward it caught the teeht.

My only guess is maybe is froze over the window and pressed that out.

Now , The lower unit is still good(I think), Its just that plate is broke.

My question is, Can i just replace that plate easily? I've not tore into it. But it looks like i can just replace that plate. How hard is it to change that plate? I've never worked on a lower unit with that plate. Just trying to save him some cash if i can. Also what else would i need if i just changed that? I'm guessing some seals and or gasket.

Any help would be appreciated!

Well, if you are sure it is a 2004, here is the parts listing:

40/50/60 EFI (4 CYL) 4-STROKE - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

See the plate you are talking about as item 51 under Gear Housing(Prop Shaft)(1.83:1 Gear Ratio). You will have to determine the correct gear ratio when you get the s/n.

Yes, it looks like it was caused by freezing water. If you require a service manual, send me a PM with an email address and I will forward it to you.
