First off I love this motor... I have had absolutly no problems with it so far. I havn't found situation where the motor fails using it for duck hunting and fishing both putting it to the test. Just this weekend I had it out on the mississippi fishing in single digit temps, I had close to 1/4" of ice built up on the side of the motor and it started and ran like it was a 75 degree summer day.

anyways to my question... The one thing that I don't like. My motor is a tiller control... is there anyway to tighten or lock the motor so that it can not turn during trailering? I have a transom saver the motor sits on and when I go around a corner the motor turns and stays side ways.

my grampa has a mercury and there is lever that you can slide one way or the other to adjust the pressure it takes to turn the motor. I was just wondering if there was something on my motor that I didn't know about to keep it from turning on me while I am trailering my boat.

Not sure, but if nothing else, a couple of stratigically placed bungee cords should do the trick... It does say on the BRP site, that there is a LEVER Assy, Trail lock assembly that is different from the Tilt and reverse lock..

EDIT: Never mind, That is the tilt lock for trailering..Huuummm

BRP

#38

I think that lever is just to keep it tilted up for trailering Rick. No friction screw on the swivel bracket either. Looks like bungee cords to keep it in one position for trailering.

Yeah, OBJ, after I looked at it again, I threw that edit into my reply. You'd think they would have thought of these things by now. So much for advanced technology...

LOL!!!! Advanced technology.......wrap a bungee around it.......... :D :D

I think the engineers figure if it's not remote control, it ain't trailered.....

Just wondering what the problem is with the motor sitting sideways. I usually put mine sideways to begin with just to keep it from slopping around when I trailer. I figured the transom saver would keep it from moving.

Hard to keep the engine from moving without a TNT unit Cricket. I can snug my 90hp down on the transom saver and it don't move while trailering with the TNT. But an engine without a TNT unit is pretty much free to roll around even with a bungee attached. The only real thing to do is lean the engine to one side and use a rope or bungee to keep it there.

Its not a big deal... nor does it hurt anything to have it turn one way, it just bugs me for some reason.

I guess if that is the only fault I can find in the motor, I am doing pretty good.

Can't say where it is on the motor, but in the parts book,on the tiller handle screen,#43 and 44, spring and screw ,steering friction.Maybe something in the owners manual ?

DHP

Re: '04 50hp Etec ???

I thought we were talking about an aftermarket transom saver that attaches to the trailer and then to the LU. Even when I snug my 200's down onto the factory trailer lock with the TNT, they roll a little, and that's with hydraulic steering. I usually put them to one side or the other and that keeps them from rolling. When I trailer my smaller boat with a 115, I put it to one side and use a ratchet strap wrapped around the lower unit and attached to the trailer to keep the engine from bouncing around.

I think I know the screw your talking about... it has a spring on it. I think that is for adjusting the force needed to turn the motor.Probly not something you would want to have to change all the time.

I was looking for something that would be quick, like moving a lever to tighten/lock it. I don't want to have to carry a screw driver with me and tighten that screw once I have the boat out of the water and on the trailer. Than loosen it the next time out so I can turn the motor while on the water.

Re: '04 50hp Etec ???

If my recolection of the transom saver is correct, it's just a "Y" shaped lever hinged to the trailer. Would it be possible to extend the "v" part of the "Y" to better holster the LU? Just a thought.

Re: '04 50hp Etec ???

Walley Diver....that screw with the spring is the steering friction screw. And you are right, you can make it stiffer to steer by running the screw in. (DHP is correct....the screw shows up with the tiller handle parts breakdown.....go figure...... :)

Probably the easiest thing to do is, as was posted, lean it to one side and use one of those high tech bungees to keep it from flopping over the other way.
