'04 50 hp cooling problem

I put the water muffs on and started engine but got no water flow. Engine temp alarm sounded so I shut engine off. The engine hadn't been started for about 9 months. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

'04 mercury 50 hp 2 stroke cooling problem

The motor had not been started for 9 months until today. I put on a set of muffs and it started right up but water was not going thru the cooling system. The temp alarm sounded so I shut it down. After cooling off I tried it again. This time water was flowing thru it but if the pressure was lowered on the supply hose the flow thru the motor went down also. I then tried it with the foot in a tank of water to see if it would work. I got some flow but not enough to keep it cool. Is my problem the water pump and or the thermostat? Any help appreciated.

When is the last time the impeller and thermostat was changed? If you don't know they are past due.

I would drop the lower end, and check and replace the impeller
