Like I said in the title I have an 03 yamaha 40 tlrd 2-stroke that has ran great every since I bought it brand new in 03. About two years ago I was coming out of the duck woods and hit a log causing the engine to die. Since then it has occasionally not idled like it should. It'll start up great when it's cold but as soon as it goes down to idle it will either start running rough and die or it will chirp almost like the sound a dog would make when you step on it's toe and die right after that. As long as it's not idling it runs great. I have this motor on a 15ft war eagle and it will push that boat around 34 mph with two or three people in it but picking up decoys or using it to put out yoyo's is a little annoying when you have to listen to it occasionally make that noise and die. I have cleaned the carbs and checked the reeds still with no better results. Reeds appeared to be fine of course I know their could be something unseen. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sounds like the pilot/idle passages need some more cleaning and/or you need to do the proper adjustments after putting carbs back on(link and sync like the manual calls for)

You might check to make sure the timing is where it is suppose to be at idle, but the chipping sounds like it is leaning out too far
