03 XR6 150 hp lower unit oil change And maintenance

I have recently purchased a Pro Craft bass boat with a 150hp XR6. The year model on the engine harness etc is 2003. I don't have any manuals so I need to gather info. Could someone please tell me how often to change lower unit oil, where to drain and fill, how much and what kind of oil to use, and what additives to use if any. Also any routine maintenance items that I need to be aware of. Thanks in advance for any help.

the gear lube should be changed at 100 hrs. or once a year. you may want to use mercs. high performance gear lube(blue in collor). get a good manual and always use new drain plug gaskets. the lower unit should be filled from the bottom with a pump style l/u filler. good luck!

Definitely use the High Perf gear lube in a high performance setup where you might be surfacing the prop a bit.

That LU, if it's the original, is a small diameter, 1.78:1 unit. They have a habit of putting the pinion out the side in a high performance setup if it's not well lubed.

That's a good engine, spunky, and on the high side of the 150 hp spec.

Thanks for the help guys. Yeah, it seems to be a fast motor, jumps on plane if goosed. Any ideas on where to download a manual?

Don't think there is any place to download. Spend the money and get a REAL Merc manual. The aftermarket's tell you just enough to get you in trouble.

Just for you John. If you do some checking I think you will find that the small gearcase went away in mid '90's. Later years went to big case with 2:1 and 1:87 ('cept for high alltitude, 2.3:1). Just thought you might want to know for later reference......D
