I've decided to tackle changing the impeller on my Merc 20 this year with the guidance of a Seloc manual. I've never done this before so am looking for pointers.

I've ordered the impeller and new O-rings via Mercury Parts Express website. I changed the lower unit oil last fall so I'm wondering if I can just drop the unit without draining it for this job. It looks pretty stright forward but I'm a little apprehensive never having done this before. I only run in a clean and pretty clear fresh water lake so don't plan to change the whole pump unit. As motors go, I'd say it's had pretty light us overall. And is it really necessary to tighten using a torque wrench?

Any tricks or advice for this job? Thanks.

You shouldnt have to drain the oil.

Should be straight foward. Make sure you put it in gear as this will aid in ligning up the shaft later upon reasembly. Good Luck!!:)

pull off our prop and grease propshaft and check for fishing line...coat the impeller with dish soap to ease forcing the housing over impeller(already on driveshaft)...rotate shaft clockwise(looking down on) as you are forcing housing over impeller to get impeller blades going the right direction

Thanks, good tip. I did prop shaft lube last fall.
