Still in the search for my first boat. Most of what has been in my range is much older, but I came across an 02 Tracker V16 for only $5200. Only problem is it has a 40HP 4stroke Merc. I like the 4stroke part, but seems this would be better with a 60 or so. Do you think this is underpowered? No kids, don't plan on tubing and the like, but don't want to go super slow either. Any insight?

What is the boat rated for? You will need 70% of the rated power for good all-round performance.

That boat is definitely underpowered with a 40 four stroke. You are correct in that a 60 would be a far better match and I suspect that's why the rig is for sale. Tracker is noted for making these packages very attractive from a price point but they do it by underpowering the boat.

Max HP is either 70 or 75, so 70% would be roughly a 50HP or better. So I'm guessing its just too little power. Thats disheartening, looked to be in great shape. Seems like before my wife gave me the green light, there were a ton of boats that would've fit the bill, and now they're few and far between. Of course, I may have gotten pickier.
