Ayuh,..... Pull an O2 sensor out of the exhaust pipe, Before the Cat...

If the Cat is plugged, it'll start....

If not,... I guess I'm wrong...

If this happened suddenly after car was running just fine, might be
the ignition switch. Your key should have a "anti theft" chip in it.
The thing in the switch that read's the key often fails, common GM
problem.
Try turning key to "on" for 3 minutes, then try starting. If it start's
and runs ok then that is the problem.

When you say you can hear the pump, can you hear it constantly ???

" it will fire for half a second" --What fires for a half second, the pump or the engine???

Spark or fuel pressure ? One of ems missing. Sounds like fuel in this case.

My 99 Jeep does this with the non anti theft plain metal key but I am sure GM's pass key is different and will never allow it to start without the proper key.
When that pass key system would go awry on my old 00 Chevy S10 an amber security light would blink.

Re: 02 Grand Am won't start

Well, there were no blinking lights, I drained half a tank of fuel and replaced it with fresh, I could hear the the pump come on when I turned on the key, the motor would somehow get enough fuel to run for a half second, it would start on starting fluid, I went to Oriellys to buy a pressure gauge to check the pump pressure but was to cheap to pay the 45$ for it, but the 18 yr old kid behind the counter told me about the pass lock and to turn the key on for 10 min. turn the key off but don't take it out, then start it. It worked. Thanks for everyones help . I forgot I posted here this am. Thanks again
