I just bought 2 2001 Yamaha xl800 about a month ago. They had only 35 hours on them. One was hard to start on the test drive but once it got going, it ran about 7300 rpm at 50 mph. However it hasn't been run in a month and now won't start. I changed the plugs. Fuel is fresh, and the battery tested good and charged. It turns over but won't fire at all.
The other starts ok but only goes 6300 rpm and tops out at 43 mph. Local dealership says probably need new diaphragms in the carbs on both. I know that both sat for quite a bit of time over the last few years because the lake they used them on flooded several times and was too contaminated to run. I looked at them and said what deal! But now I am concerned about rebuilding 2 carbs. I am not mechanically inclined. I replaced both sets of spark plugs and added sea foam to the slower machine. Didn't really see any change in either and like I said, one won't start.
My questions are:
Does this sound like a carb issue on both?
Should I redo the carbs if I will only ride for maybe another 6 weeks before the winter? (I live in SW Texas so my summer is a little longer than most)
What should I expect to pay? For diaphragms? Total rebuild?
What should I do to winterize and protect this maintenance investment?
Thanks!
