Thanks for the replies on my last post.
I was thinking of purchasing a salt water rental W/600 hrs.It sounds like a lot, is that to much. How long should they last? What is good compression for this motor and what should I look for? Is this generally a good motor. Any info will help.
Thanks.

Hours on the motor, I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. The reason I am thinking four stroke is fuel effincy and range, I have a 97
Johnson 115 two stroke. I was told a four stroke gets almost twice that of two strokes.

Hi,
If the price is reasonably and the service is documented I would personally take a chance on this 115 hp 4-stroke EFI. I'm not sure what a good compression is on this exact outboard but it is important that the values are about equal on all cylinders. It is a very good outboard, that have many test showed (in comparison with Suzuki DF115/Johnson 115 4-stroke, Yamaha F115 -outboards that is in the same class).

Fuel efficency:
Compared with any old 115 hp 2-stroke carburated outboard it should be at least about 30% more fuel efficent. And more quite of course. I belive the Mercury 115 EFI 2001 is 2-star rated so it is very environmentally friendly also (but CARB 3-star rating is the highest rating today, 4-star is possible but no outboard is yet on the market with that rating).

If the outboard you are interested in has not documented maintenance history I would not buy it. To risky.

Are You buying from a private person or from a marine dealer?

Good luck!

Re: 01' merc 115 horse 4 stroke efi

Compression checks on a 4-stroke are only marginally effective. A Leakdown test tells far more and doesn't take much longer to do. For some shops, a poor compression reading will prompt a follow-up leakdown test. I prefer to do the leakdown right off the bat and sometimes skip the compression test. However on a 2-stroke, compression is one of the first things I check.

No matter what kind of motor you run, the same horsepower takes about the same amount of fuel. 2-strokes are rather efficient toward the top of the RPM range, even the carbed ones. It's below 3/4 throttle or so where other kinds of motors have an advantage over carbureted or EFI 2-strokes. The new Direct Injeced models actually beat 4-strokes in just about every category making most DFIs more efficient than 4-strokes.
