01 700 Yamaha NO SPARK!!!!

Need a little help with this one guys...checked the lanyard, and it's fine,still no spark... How can you check the CDI unit? I really don't want to shell out a couple of hundred bucks only to find out it's not the problem! Any help would be appreciated....Cheerz

theres no test for the cdi all the other electrical componients need to be tested first....does the machine turn over?
