I have an 01' Champion 203 and an 01' 225hp. Optimax. A few days ago my oil light lit up upon cranking the boat and started beeping. I checked the oil and it was kind of low, so I just made a short run (a mile or two) and fished. I then came back loaded up the boat and went and got some DFI oil. I filled the tank in the hull, a little past the line. Next day oil alarm sounded upon start up, then shut off. I went fishing about 2 hours later in the middle of a run, oil alarm and light came on, I stopped shut motor down, and called dealer. He had me check the tank on the motor and it was a little more than 3/4 full. He said all should be OK then. I was still worried, so I loaded up the boat and came back to house. Any ideas? I don't want to ruin this motor..... Is this a false alarm or what?

Thanks,

Zack

I think you should run the motor on premix in a portable tank. (On the hose of course, or in water) Loosen the cap slightly on the motor tank until oil begines to seep out of the top and then tighten only enough so it does not leak. Then check to see if the alarm goes away. Most alarms like to have the engine tank full.
If that doesn't fix it, I would run premix until you find and fix the problem. Should be ok doesn't cut in my book and should not in yours. If something goes wrong, the dealer will say, oh well, things happen.

Yea. "should be ok" doest cut it for me either. Thats a big problem if I run that motor and it's not getting any darn oil. The dealer also told me that your not supposed to switch from the DFI oil if it has been perviously run... any truth to that? I appreciate the response. I'll try it tomorrow. Thanks.

Had a similar problem on my O3 250 saltwater series motor. Was told to replace the tank on the motor cause there is a magnet that moves up and down the sensor and when it gets stuck there is not much you can do.It was a relativly cheap fix...like $40 for the tank, and havent had a problem since.Hope that was a little help to you.

The sensor for low oil level is in the top of the engine oil tank. So, when it's 3/4 full, it will sound an alarm. You should be hearing 4 beeps every 2 minutes and the oil light is on, correct? It also appears that since the oil level keeps dropping, the oil pump is working. It can be checked by a dealer with a DDT.
Since you seem to be using oil out of the engine mounted tank and it's not filling back up, I would be checking the remote oil tank. The cap has to fit air tight so the tank can be pressurized to push the oil into the engine tank.
I have found hoses pinched off with deck hatches, loose caps, cracked fittings on the tank, and also a bad check valve on the engine block that pressurizes the remote tank.
