I recently purchased my first inboard, so despite 45+ years of boating experience, I am a “newbie." Also, despite some wrenching on my ’66 Mustang (289 HO) as a youth -- as a marine mechanic, I’m a pretty good house-carpenter.

The boat is a 1979 Almar (Aluminum Marine Construction, inc.) Jetline, 20’9” stem to stern plus a 29” wide jet guard (like a swim deck). The beam is 84” with a 72” bottom with an 18” wide flat for the jet and a 14 deg V (at the stern) from there. This is an exceptionally sturdy welded aluminum boat with a 1/4” thick bottom. The boat weighs 4100 lbs, wet. There were at least 3 previous owners.

The power plant is a 302 cu in V-8 hooked to a Jetcraft Turbodrive 3-stage jet pump (Model 753); it also has a small Honda outboard “kicker.”

I have an owner’s manual for the Jet Craft Turbo Drive, and can find a book for the Honda, but the V-8 has me stumped.

I haven’t yet found the serial number on the block to try to get info from Ford or anyone else. Where should I start looking for info? Or, better yet, a manual?

The engine now has a Carter AFB carburetor, which I suspect was not “stock.” It does have a flame arrestor. (I did read the article about Marine Carburetors at cpperformance.com which is mentioned in another thread.) Is this AFB an approved marine carburetor? How can I tell? What else should I worry about?

The present fuel pump (which looks newer than the rest of the engine) is certainly an automotive pump. Should I replace the fuel pump with a marine pump? Where would I find one? Is there a source for marine engine parts, which y'all like as much as Champion Trailers for trailer parts?

The exhaust manifolds are aluminum and say “Edelbrock, M-15” on them. There is some freeze damage and some damage from someone “moosing” on one of the fittings until the aluminum split. The damage was “repaired” with epoxy (it leaks!). I hope my local prop shop can weld the cracks and re-drill & tap the hole for the fitting. If this fails, where might I find replacement manifolds. Once the manifold is repaired, should I replace the existing gaskets, or just use high temp RTV as one local mechanic suggested? I did get all the studs out cleanly, and will replace all of them with new from NAPA. Should I use Never-Seez (Marine Grade) on the new studs? Should I use brass nuts as NAPA suggests or stick with steel? How much torque should be applied to the new nuts?

With the manifolds off, it’s time to replace the Autolite 45 spark plugs. What would you recommend as a replacement? Put Never Seez on the threads? How tight (torque)?

Sorry for the length of the post. I’m sure that I'll have even more (idiotic?) questions later.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Go-Fishing... An OMC Sterndrive service manual for that year would most likely have information like torque values, timing, and other basic engine specs... You might also find some info in an automotive service manual...
http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...0136&current_category=book>manual>stern drive

My personal favorite source for engine parts is www.ebasicpower.com ... You might also check the Iboats Marine Megamall for parts...

I would change the fuel pump and use a metal fuel line from the pump to the carb...

As for the carb I would not be able to tell you because I dont know carter carbs very well... I believe carter does make some marine carbs though...

Those Edlebrock manifolds are going to be difficult to find if have to replace them... I have seen a few used ones like those on E-bay from time to time.. Hope they can repair them for ya.. I would try to find the replacement gaskets or even cut out my own rather than use RTV... For bolting the manifold to heads, a little anti-seez and Torque em down to 25-30ft lbs... Steel or Brass nuts...

Spark plugs Torque to 7ft lbs..
OMC recomended plugs for 302 are as follows.. Gap 0.035"
Champion RV15YC-4
Motorcraft ARF-32M
or any autoparts store should be able to match either of these numbers up with any other brand of your choice....

Hope this helps a little... :)

Re: ’79 302 engine

Hi,
Your boat sounds like a northwest coast jet(or New Zealand).. Pretty Cool... I've always Dreamed of one of those Little River Runners...
For your Questions.....
Ebay has Manuals for Everything, It just depends When you look.... Amazon.com also has a pretty fair selection of manuals.... a Ford manual of About the same Vintage would have Most of the info you seek....as to the #s, I'm a chevy guy... Don't even know where to start looking......
The Carter AFB is a great, Easy to tune carb.....Merc. uses the same carb., with a Weber name on it.... Edelbrock Also makes the same exact carb.....Is Yours Approved?? Don't Know... Probably... they're pretty popular......
The fuelpump Should have a vinyl vent line going to the flamearrester....
Favorite Parts Place...... NAPA......
Marine Products... Cat.# MSP-7..... ALL the parts you ask about in your post are in there..... Gaskets, Plugs, Tune-up parts, Even the Manifolds... center riser, or logs......iron, not aluminum....
Stainless header bolts will work better, than the brass or steel nuts,+ studs..... IMO, Never-Sieze should be put on Anything you want to take apart again....

Be Careful repairing your exhaust... an External leak is a pain, BUT an Internal leak will cost you your Engine.....

Re: ’79 302 engine

Snapperbait, and Bondo, thanks for your prompt responses and suggestions.

I am still hoping to get some hints as to where to find the engine serial numbers to help me track down who marinized this engine, and then go to them for manuals and parts (maybe ;-)).

I do expect to replace the fuel pump with the proper one, and the carb only if necessary.

I do have my finger crossed on the manifolds. From the pictures that I can see in the catalogs, I can’t imagine how I would fit cast iron manifolds, etc in this boat. Because of physical contact between some of the exhaust system parts and the structure of this aluminum boat, I worry about electrolysis.

Yes, Bondo, I am thrilled to finally have a NW Jet Boat after many years of wanting, and shopping. I think I bought this boat well enough that I can afford to make it right. Also, although I do spend most of my time here in the Great Pacific North West, several times a year I visit your (general) area to open and close my mom’s summer home on Keuka (one of the Finger Lakes). I have treasured childhood memories of bass-fishing trips to Henderson Harbor with my Grandfather and his favorite guide (transplanted French-Canadian, as I remember.)

Thanks.

Re: ’79 302 engine

Mercruiser put the SN on a tag behind the intake I think. There should also be a code there that Ford stamped that may help, but not much. I just rebuilt my 302 Marine Mercruiser last summer. I'll try to remember to look up the plugs that Merc recommends just so you have some options.

Like the others already, favorite parts places: ebasicpower.com and northernautoparts.com

Re: ’79 302 engine

the pump is made by Marine Power. marinepowerusa.com .kodiak parts will mostly fit but not all.they dont currentlycarry any marinized fords.Redline does but i dont have their number and i hear that they can be less than helpful sometimes.the 3 redlines in jets here all have unbranded manifolds so engine probably isnt theirs anyway....bout time kem put up a site ! thankyou bondo for posting it . i have told them several times it would make my life easier. now if they would just make it so i could order from it.

There is a guy here in town that can help you. I have a ford 302 in a 76' Beachcraft that i buy all of my parts though him. His name is Mark at Marks Marine. His # is 503-653-7770. If this is not OK to post this type of info on this site I appoligize fell free to remove it. As for welding if you would like to contact me I know of several certifited welders in the area and would be happy to refer you to one.

jmm0422@cs.com

Re: ’79 302 engine

What do you guys know about these Kodiak manifolds ????
I just picked up a set, on ebay, for an engine I'm building.... These appear to be an older model, as the port seperation stops lower in the collector, Than the pictures at the website...
I want to top these manifolds off with stainless risers,+ run a closed cooling system.... Going to be Allot of Aluminum on this motor....
Sm. Block 327 bored(4.030),+ stroked(3.75)....

Re: ’79 302 engine

Bondo- I was wondering why you used a 327 block to build the 383 instead of a 350 block? Do you want to sell the crank from the 327? Let me know something

Re: ’79 302 engine

Hi Ken,
I found an old 327 in a friends barn when he bought his new house several years ago... It turns out to be a 68/69 327 Large Journal block.. Built only for 2 years... in 69, chevy increased the stroke 1/4" to create the 350cid... SO, in reallity it IS a 350 block...even though the casting #s say it's a 327cid.... It Just Sounds SO Much Better.. As Far as "Dock Talk" goes....
I Wish the crank had been OK, as they Are Quite Rare(lrge journal).... But the rear flange was cracked,+ would have needed a regrind anyway....It went in the scrap bin ....Sorry....
I'm Still looking for Any info on these Kodiack Manifolds.... My engine builder/machinest says the exhaust will be the Choke point of this motor... If I can find any flow #s for these, Then we can build a well Balanced Engine System..... Re; No need to flow "In" more than we can Flow "Out"....
