I'm gonna to be picking up an outboard motor and would like to know how to test it without the controls?
The ob is a 70hp Johnson if that helps.
I will bring a long a fuel tank and a battery and my tools.
Can I use jumper cables to spin the starter and do a compression test that way?
What else should I look for.
Thanks

Re: How do yo utest withOut controls?

I usually bring a battery, jumpers, a compression tester and tool box. I'm not too concerned about starting the motor, as long as it has good compression. Also check the L/U oil for water intrusion. I ALWAYS assume the motor will need new points/coils/condensers, a new impeller and a carb rebuild. So the price I'm willing to pay will take into account those items. If I take it home and find new coils, etc. I consider it a bonus.

jumpers MAY work....Id get a long battery cable and crimp on some ring teminals and bolt up the battery connection right....

you only need two cables maybe 6-8 feet long and four terminals

they dont have to be as heavy duty as normally used , because they are just test cables.

the guy doesnt have a control with the motor???

if you cant hear it run, just go ahead and assume it will need a carb rebuild...and then check for spark and compression and looks for neglect and or corrosion

and look for replaced parts, gasket sealer excess is a clue...

good luck

Thanks guys!
I'll look at all those things.
I really want to make sure it has compression.
As for the rest, seller said that the impeller was changed.
I will ask for some paper work on that claim.
