I am thinking about swapping my 2001 40hp Honda for a 2000 75hp Honda on my pontoon. Is the control box and steering controls the same? Would this be a straight swap out for the motor? Thanks for the replies.

Is the boat rated for a 75?
Can't help much on the controls but keep in mind a pontoon eats up power
pretty fast.If your 40 does 18 mph your 75 would probably do about 25-28 and burn about 7.5 gph(gallons per hour)Of course you can throttle back and cruise at the 40s speed and the 75 will be loafing.

I don't know this for a certainty but most controls work most/all engines of the same brand.

I know a Yamaha control box will work with everything from a 9.9 to 250 and believe Honda is the same way, look in the phone bok and call a dealer to confirm this.

You don't say what kind of boat it is so check with the maker to be sure the motor pod will handle the extra power, would hate to see a post "How do you retrieve an engine from the lake?"

Re: Honda 40hp swap for 75hp??

The boat is a 2485 Crestliner, rated for a 150, so a 75 should be no problem. The 40 is ok, 14mph empty, 11mph with 5 people, but any more then it dogs at about 7. I'm hoping with the 75 that I can cruise at 15mph with 8 people. I'm getting pretty good mileage with the 40 when idleing around, 3hours to a gallon. What's the 75 going to be like when idleing around?

Re: Honda 40hp swap for 75hp??

I just changed from a 50hp to a 70 hp not as big a change as you are thinking about,, I did get 4 more mph doing that,, and I found both get aprox 1.5 miles on a gallon of fuel,, that is obviously due to all the resistance on the boat , working on that situation now.
So gallons per hour are more with the 70 but getting to my destination is faster, so it evens out basically.
