    Lake Trout From A Canoe

So, I have an epic canoe trip up in British Columbia coming up and have decided to bring along my fishing pole. The trip will be the Bowron chain, and the boat will be one powered by me and a buddy. I imagine there is minimal fishing pressure in this neck of the woods, but I have never fished...

    Play in prop

So, I hit my first rock with my vintage 71 650... Directly afterward the boat had a new vibration. Not much mind you but a slight vibration. We were only about 1/10th of a mile from the dock and got the boat there and out of the water without driving it any more. All 3 blades of the prop had...

Turning at full throttle - dangerous

Ok, another newbe question. Growing up without a boat, I always heard that you should never turn the stearing wheel of a boat all the way to the side and then hit full throttle. "The force of the motor will flip the boat over," was always the explination. Now I have a boat, abet a bit...

    1971 - 7.5 hp choke removal

So I'm getting ready to rebuild the carb in the old 75. The repair manual sais to remove the choke then remove the carb. The only problem is that I cannot seem to figure out how to remove the choke linkage from the carb. It obviously needs taken off before the carb will slip out. Any thoughts?

Triming a motor without automatic tilt/trim

I have a 17 foot fiberglass ski & fish that has an old 65 hp merc to push it around the lake. The motor needs to be adjusted to the right trim angle before starting out on the lake. This is done by muscling it to the right height and squirreling a narrow gage rod through some holes going...

    Newbee watersport toys question?

So I am the proud new owner of a 1971 vintage fiberglass v-hull. The boat has a 65 hp motor that seems to run pretty dang good all things considered. After getting her on the lake and making sure it runs now I am thinking ahead to summer and fun on the lake. Fishing is a given, but what about...

Old 7.5 hp merc, money pit or salvageable

I picked up a 1971 merc 75 outboard this winter. It turned over in the guys garage, but I did not do a compression check when I bought it ($200). When I got it out on the lake I found it could be started, barely, and reved up, again barely. Today I finally hooked up a compression tester and...

    Buying a compression tester

I went to the local parts store to get a compression tester. All the models they have were metric only with adapters for 12mm, 14mm & 18mm threads. My motors are both 1971 Merc's. Will any one of these old $25 metric compression testers from the parts store work or do I need a special SAE...

    71 Merc 650 - change starter solenoid?

I have isolated my starting problems down to the starter solenoid. Of course, now I need to remove the solenoid... Any suggestions on an easy way to get it in/out. I unbolted the two bolts holding it in but cannot jimmy it out of the tight fitting space it rests in underneith the starter...
