Mercruiser 3.0 overheated, Is my motor shot?

Hey guys sorry it’s been a minute since I’ve got back to this. I didn’t do a leak down test but decided to just run it in the drive way. Starts up fine and doesn’t run any rougher than it did before (characteristics of an inline 4 maybe?). Sounds perfect at idle and responds immediately...

Mercruiser 3.0 overheated, Is my motor shot?

Alright. Sorry it’s been a minute to retest. Bought a new compression tester and here are the results… #1 - 150 psi #2 - 90 psi #3 - 145 psi #4 - 150 psi Did a wet test on #2 and minimal change. Slightly over 90. Could it be the valves for #2? If I had a blown head gasket I would have...

Mercruiser 3.0 overheated, Is my motor shot?

I put it in hand tight with some “umpf”, I do see there are flats on it for a wrench… should I wrench it down?

Mercruiser 3.0 overheated, Is my motor shot?

I rented the auto zone special, might just go buy one for $40. It’s definitely putting out something because the bit of fuel that was in there did spray out.

Mercruiser 3.0 overheated, Is my motor shot?

Alright guys need some help… Went to do a compression test and did the following steps, I obviously did not warm it up since I’d rather not attempt to run right out the gate.. Disconnected fuel line from carb Removed all spark plugs Placed in WOT Tested all cylinders but turning over for...

Mercruiser 3.0 overheated, Is my motor shot?

Checked a couple things this morning. Oil is still full and clean. No external oil leaks I can find. Quick Look at the exhaust manifold exterior doesn’t revel any cracks. Will start with compression test before I get to far into it. I’ll report back with numbers later. Thanks for...

Mercruiser 3.0 overheated, Is my motor shot?

I did bump the key when I got Home, fuel off, and it turns over easy, so it’s not seized. I have already written the flapper and boots as toast considering I can pull the pieces out the exhaust bellow.

Mercruiser 3.0 overheated, Is my motor shot?

No warning horn and I just replaced the impeller 2 months ago. It’s ran fine each time out until now… when the water intake hose disconnected… as stated

Mercruiser 3.0 overheated, Is my motor shot?

Hey Guys. Took the boat out. Had it idling for maybe 10 mins and took off on a plane for about 90 seconds. Motor started loosing power, noticed smoke from the engine bay and shut it off. Smoke was coming from the rubber that connects the exhaust riser to the pipe going to the transom. Got...

lower shift shaft positioning for gear selection

This was the answer. Thank you!! Issue obviously occurred when I split the lower off. Messed with it today and 30 mins later now it’s shifting smoother than an oil slick.

2002 Mercruiser 3.0 - No Oil? Engine Swap?

Update - yanked the old motor out this weekend, checked dip stick for fun after it was out and on the ground and guess what… oil is now showing (or chocolate milk 🤔) …still can’t explain its disappearance 🤷‍♂️. Oh well.. tear down and rebuild is in its future and I’ll have a spare motor… or at...

2002 Mercruiser 3.0 - No Oil? Engine Swap?

I had the same thought about the dipstick so I straightened out a coat hanger and pushed it all the way in, still nada. Compression on the replacement motor is ~170psi. The motor is already out of the boat, is there a simple way to check oil pressure?

2002 Mercruiser 3.0 - No Oil? Engine Swap?

Scott - Thanks, the "new to me" motor is a complete set up so I'm leaning towards just a swap... time troubleshooting issue motor vs swapping a working one. it is worth starting it on the hose and seeing if you get water into the oil . Sometimes will just crack externally and people slap JB...

2002 Mercruiser 3.0 - No Oil? Engine Swap?

Hey guys - Two part question.. #1 - I recently acquired a 2002 Bayline with a 3.0 Merc that hasn't ran in 2 years. It does have a crack on the port side of the block (unknown if overheated or not winterized). I Drained the oil out of it and did get some water but it was not milky looking...
