1990 V4 runs on two cylinders at low RPMs

Engine ran quite well at all speeds for the last few weeks of the season, but there was a bit of a fuel leak, building fuel slowly in the engine housing. Getting it ready now to put in the water. * Engine will not start. It did start when on blocks last winter. A good amount of white smoke...

1990 V4 runs on two cylinders at low RPMs

Just saw your reply. Thanks. The kits were OEM. I tried both old and new needles when trouble shooting. Old needles looked to be in great shape (but there could be something I don't see). I did not remove any lead plugs. Before installing, I blew in the intake to make sure it was air tight. On...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

Got some more experience with this 14 x 11 prop. It's moving the boat a hair faster now: 22-23 mph, as fast as it's ever gone. Max rpms are 5100 to 5250. Seems to depend on the weather or who knows what. Motor is running a lot smoother. I'm going to call this problem solved, at least for the...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

I installed a new 100 dollar 14 x 11 prop. I get * 14 x 11 prop, 5030 rpm, 21-22 mph at WOT * 13.75 x 13 prop 4800 rpm, 22-23 mph at WOT I accidentally had my gps on a very low sampling rate for the 14x11 prop. I'll have to test it again later. I'd trust all those numbers better after...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

My kid really thought it was a wilder ride. It was pretty obvious to me too. I trimmed the prop down a lot, too, so it was easier to stop ventilating (or whatever makes the prop lose bite) The speed was 23, sometimes 24. Hard to say what the max speed is because the gps speed has some flukes...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

The new prop ordered online arrived: A 100 dollar Al 13 3/4 x 13 prop. I get 4800 RPM and 23 MPH at WOT (hits 24 MPH very occasionally). Same both directions, so I think there is no wind. With the SS 17 inch prop I got 4300 RPM and 22 MPH. I tried to find more info on exactly which RPM gives...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

I'm waiting on delivery of a 13 3/4 x 13 prop. Thanks for the advice.

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

But I said "But I bet the pitch is way too high" for the 150 HP prop. I meant that I've called several shops, spoken to several people, and the only loaner prop I can get my hands on is from a rocket boat with a 150 HP motor, which is not going to help. Two boat shops did make a recommendation...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

I called a couple of boat shops asking for a prop shop, no good answers. They just sell props, no returns of course. I called a couple of prop shops, but they are out of business. Asked several people who have boats, but they don't know where to go. My nephew has the stock prop on a shelf for an...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

    > A Mercury Black Max and hub Kit to put it on your Evinrude I can get an off brand after market Al prop made for the motor for about half the price. Is there an advantage to the Black Max? I suppose it depends on the characteristics of the aftermarket prop. Since the prop has a huge effect on...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

I used the solas tool, it was saying 11 to 13 inches pitch depending on my guesses for weight and width of pontoons. I don't know what rpms it was targeting. I don't trust the tool enough to buy one thinking it will work well. > Switching to an aluminum prop, even with the same pitch, would...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

I need at a minimum to choose diameter and number of blades. It looks like aluminum 3 blades and 14 x 13 is popular for similar boats and HP. And this (as stated above) should get me in the higher end of the manufacturers recommended range. Does that sound reasonable? I did read a report from...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

    > Very hard, Engine is strained, and Melted Pistons can occur I better make this a priority. I bought the boat a couple of months ago. No idea why it has this prop. > However, it would be very cool to live on a large lake I'm kind of envious of people who can take long trips and adventure...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

Is it correct to think that it's lugging now? (Assuming it's not a problem with the motor itself.) Like riding a bicycle up a hill in a gear that's too high. You should shift to a lower gear and increase the rpms

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

    > Pontoon boats do not really have a hole shot, as they do not really plane out. Yeah it's always got a lot of big pontoon surface making contact. And all the water jetting between the transom and toons at WOT does not look efficient at all. I wonder if it is hard on the motor, or is...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

OMC says rpm at WOT should be 4500 -- 5500. I get 4300 now. Should I try a new prop? Evinrude 90HP V4 model: E90TLESB Compression: 122 +- 2 psi on all four cylinders 389948 Evinrude Johnson Stainless Steel Prop (13-3/8 x 17) Thru-Hub Exhaust. Has a small ding on one blade. 24 foot 1994 Crest...

    1990 90HP E90TLESB rough at low RPMs

This problem is solved. I got more precise info, so I started a new topic to keep extraneous info out of the thread: https://forums.iboats.com/threads/1990-v4-runs-on-two-cylinders-at-low-rpms.768522/ That new topic was finally solved. The plastic float bowls were warped. I sanded them and also...

1990 V4 runs on two cylinders at low RPMs

A final note: I adjusted both the toothed wheel where the throttle cable is anchored to the motor and the idle stop screw. I started the motor several times over a few days. It starts and idles well indefinitely at low rpm. Seems fairly smooth at all speeds.

1990 V4 runs on two cylinders at low RPMs

The bottom carb is a little wet around the gasket, upper carb dry. I don't see any fuel leaking enough to make a drop or run anywhere. I still don't trust that the seal is good everywhere it should be. At some point I'll get new metal float chambers. I did the throttle valve synch and adjust...

1990 V4 runs on two cylinders at low RPMs

The sudden loss of power yesterday happened when the link between the carbs jumped out of the upper retainer clip. Retainer seems worn. I've been trying different configurations of zip ties to hold it in (I'll order another clip) The boat ran really well for several minutes at high speeds and...
