Outdrive initially jammed when turned by hand

I used an in-lb torque wrench to set the rolling torque. I didn't do anything for the gear lash or any shims since I had only changed the seals, the short yoke, and the universal joint. The short yoke was replaced because the old leaking seal had worn a gouge into the riding surface of the...

Outdrive initially jammed when turned by hand

Thanks everyone for your inputs. To answer the lingering question - yes we did set the alignment when installing the drive this Spring. I plan to dismantle the upper unit to check that. Not sure if I will tackle the bearings and gears at the lower unit. Looking at the service manual, the...

Outdrive initially jammed when turned by hand

I didn't see my exact outdrive symptoms when searching past threads, so I'm posting this for advice on next steps. I have a 1996 Alpha One Gen 2 outdrive. While towing a tube on the lake, a few hours into our day, we heard a bang, lost drive suddenly, had a bad smell of burning rubber, plus...

Gear lube poured out of gimbal bellows (Alpha 1 Gen 2)

I wanted to report back that I got the outdrive back together today with the new seals and new short yoke. Pressure tested - no leaks. I won't know for sure how well it went until I run it a few times this Spring, but so far it all looks good. Thanks everyone for your advice.

Gear lube poured out of gimbal bellows (Alpha 1 Gen 2)

Thanks all for the help. I took the yoke and seal out today. From the side that faces the u-joint, the seal did not show any visual signs of damage. However, the yolk has a significant groove in it. I'm guessing this is the cause of my leak? Not sure how this would happen while the seal...

Gear lube poured out of gimbal bellows (Alpha 1 Gen 2)

Thanks for the responses. I really appreciate them. I had not mentioned that I had drained the gear lube in advance, overnight, and had rotated the u-joint shaft as well, so I suspect this seeping was residual that just didn't drain out. Having looked at it some more, I agree with your point...

Gear lube poured out of gimbal bellows (Alpha 1 Gen 2)

Hi, I have a 1997 5.7l Mercruiser with an Alpha 1 Gen II outdrive. I pulled the outdrive last week for maintenance and had a large amount (1qt by rough estimate) of gear lube come flooding out of the gimbal bellows area. This seems wrong to me. I purchased the boat 2 years ago and this is the...
