The iboats forum moderators are excited to announce that at this time it appears the iboats forums posting pictures function is working once again. Though we cannot promise for how long, we're hoping for indefinitely.
Let it sit over night. In the morning it still wouldn't run so decided it wasn't ignition components getting hot.
Cleaned the carb for a 3rd time, it looked fine inside, but once back on she fired up and ran well. Must have still been some crud in the system.
Cleaned the carb again, started her up, ran great for 30 seconds then like crap and wouldn't keep running. I'm going to let it sit over night then start again and see how it goes so I can tell if it's running poor once it gets warm.
Could this be points or coil? Or should I just clean the...
Hi,
I bought a 1990 3HP cdoe: e3bresr. It wasn't running but has 120psi on each cylinder.
I cleaned the carb out and put it back together. I can now get it started and it idles nicely enough. New fuel is in there and a pair of new RL82C plugs gapped at 0.035.
She starts up easy enough, and...
I measured the compression today at 75psi and 83psi. Not great.
I then saw someone selling an 1990 Evinrude 3hp model: e3bresr. I did a compression test on it and it was 120psi on each cylinder. It's not running but it's been sat for a decade so suspect a carb rebuild is needed.
As mentioned...
Enough to stop my little boat getting up on plane? I tried all the trim settings and nothing helped. When I put my friends standard drive on and have it throttle the front end shot up in the air.
I doubt that the 90s 4hp johnson is significantly more powerful that the 70s 4hp johnson. They are both 2 strokes and about the same weight. Certainly not such a significant power difference.
I think the consensus is that a 4hp johnson should be faster than 5kts in such a small light boat...
I just borrowed a 90s johnson 4hp standard drive from a guy in the marina and measured 12kts. Able to get the dinghy up on plane and significantly faster than mine.
So now the question is, is it faster because of the standard vs weedless drive, or is there a problem with my motor. If it's a...
Hi, I have a 1972 4hp johnson with the weedless drive.
I've put it on an 8foot inflatableand I'm only getting 5kts. The boat only weights 25kgs and I'm of average build.
Is that to be expected? I think my main question is if I'm able to find a standard rather than weedless drive will it make...
Hi,
I got a 1972 4hp. I was doing the water pump and when I rotsted the drive shaft to get the housing on, it lifted. Now the manual says I need to dismantle the lower unit to re-engage it.
Any suggestions on how to get these screws out? The won't budge. I expect I'll need replacement...
I've read a lot on this forum saying that due to the lack of needle bearings it's advised to run them on 24:1 for longevity. I'm certainly no expert on this but it does seem to come up quite often. I think they added the additional needle bearings in 78
Yes the boatex was available in a ssilabke version, with sail daggarboard and rudder. Not really upgradable due to the daggar board hole missing
The 6 is also a 72. For the 6 the only real difference I see between the 70s and 80s is electronic ignition on the newer ones. Whereas with the 4...
Here are the specs of my dinghy

Beam: 4 ft. 6 in. / 1.37 m
Draft, board up: 0 ft. 4 in. / 0.10 m
Draft, board down: 2 ft. 4 in. / 0.70 m
Displacement: 75 lbs. / 34 kg
What HP would I need to plane? There's a 6HP for sale near me, would that do it?
Is the 8HP...
Thanks. I also found a large online which I've used and she seems to be starting and running quite nicely.
I'm disappointed with the speed though. I'm only managing 5knts in my 8 foot fibreglass dinghy. Is that to be expected?
Thanks for the advice so far. I confirmed there was spark then took the carb off and cleaned it out, although it looked pretty clean. Put it back in and still couldn't get her to start in the bucket.
I then used a drill on the flywheel and played with some of the settings and I got her started...
Hi all,
Got myself a 4HP 2 stroke today, and an 8 foot fibreglass dinghy. I put the motor on and threw her in the water but she wouldn't start. However I didn't have any tools and it was getting dark so I'll start trouble shooting in a bin tomorrow. It hasn't run in 4 years but I'm told it...
Hi all,
I am looking for a Johnson 4hp to put on a small inflatable 4 person dinghy. I expect I need the short shaft version of the motor. When looking at used motors online how do I tell if its short or long shaft if the seller doesnt specify? Do they have different model numbers?
Thanks
Thanks for all the replies everyone. I didn't know that there was such a tool for holding the flywheel, but after you told me I ordered one off Amazon. It will arrive this evening and I'll go and get it sorted. If it fails I'll try a screwdriver between starter and flywheel.
I just calibrated...
Tried that originally, but couldn't find anywhere on the v4 to hold it while I applied 100ftlbs of torque. Anywhere I tried, like the lifting eye, it would lever it round.
