Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Thanks Chris! I'm just finishing up the install and about to test. Your comments confirm what I have found.

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Lol... "Electrical parts are so confusing.----I need to stop giving tips on this stuff !"

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Well that idea is apparently open to debate. But I do understand that many trim relays are intermittent duty and operate just fine. Here's what Arco says about it: ARCO's Tech Tip on Solenoid Types and Circuits Many of the remote mount solenoids look identical on the outside. However, they can...

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Ha, no problem, as far as I can tell it's kind of correct, sort of. Apparently intermittent use is recommended and sold for trim tilt motors, but it's, as best I understand, not ideal. I think I found what I need: Arco OEM Replacement Solenoid - SW058HD Essentially a marine grade continuous...

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Well, the more I look into this the more confused I get. The one you recommended is intermittent use, but says it's for trim and starter. Maybe I don't need a continuous use solenoid?

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Makes sense. I'm trying to figure out what solenoids to buy at the moment. Still looking for a parts blow up with oem parts to match. Crowley doesn't show trim system exploded view. I'll check Marine Engines next. If you know of the correct solenoid, I'm all ears! Okay just checked marine...

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Well I'm persuaded and decided to install solenoids. I went with solenoids instead of relays. My best understanding is 3 wire motors were better with the solenoids. And hopefully they are more robust than a relay... All pretty new to me and still learning. Thanks for your help!

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Yep, after reading comments here, I decided to run with solenoids. And , yes, that switch could be quite hard to find. I haven't been able to find it yet, but didn't do a deep dive on it, as it still works.

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

That makes perfect sense. I've decided and already ordered solenoids and other parts. Thanks for taking the time to explain!

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

I see your point, probably best the install relays or solenoid. Although the switch still worked on the old boat I removed it from.

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Thanks Nordin! For now, I think I'll just use the 10 ga cable, I see no reason to add relays or solenoid, just to run a smaller wire. Is that the only reason relays are used? I would prefer to modernize the electrical, but for now I'm just going to leave it as originally designed.

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Thanks Jerry! Your comments confirm with other info. I should know, I suppose. This is how I removed two of these units from old boats. I was concerned about not having a solenoid or relays. But just not needed with that 10 ga wire as best I understand. I removed this set up from another boat...

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

After consulting with AI, I've been enlightened about the direct wire setup. Kind of amazing to get this kind of answer from my search browser... Yes, there is a legacy direct-wire setup for Chrysler/Force 3-wire systems. In this configuration, the high-amperage current for the pump travels...

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

My concern was the step down in wiring sizes. Seems like a long run and then to step down. I just found a photo of a new old stock handle and harness and it looks like it has the same kind of wire splice and I assume its stepping down in wire size. It would need to just to fit through the...

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

I've recently installed a 1980 Chrysler 115 on my boat from an old junker. My old motor didn't have trim/tilt and this one does. I started to install it the way I took it apart and I'm now wondering if I'm replicating a poor wiring job. I have 3 wires out of the pump to a connector. Then 8' of...
