    Help ID aftermarket sterndrive

Very helpful thank you! I will pull it off and see. Only thing is, that will be the number associated with the original drive. If this is in fact a replacement, then it won’t be associated with this unit. I wish there was a way to know for sure about this sterndrive.

    Help ID aftermarket sterndrive

It can’t be a repaint. I have seen (and done) too many paint jobs over the last four or five decades. I know a factory paint job when I see one. That said, I’m still flummoxed.

    Help ID aftermarket sterndrive

I just can’t believe this is a repainted unit. It just looks too good. But then the question is why doesn’t it have manufacturers labels? Does anybody know of such a thing as a “generic” replacement that is sold with no decals? When you buy a factory refurb does it come w/o decals applied?

    Help ID aftermarket sterndrive

Now I see by the assembly drawings that that plate definitely does appear to seal the gear housing. So I’m not taking that off unless I’m 100% sure that there is a pot of gold at the end of that rainbow. Maybe I should contact SEI and see if they can help me ID it.

    Help ID aftermarket sterndrive

There is literally no corrosion on the unit. It looks almost new. In the photos you can see the plain brown wrapper and condition. I haven’t got the engine running yet, so I don’t know the condition of anything. But judging by the physical outward appearance of the sterndrive, I am hopeful that...

    Help ID aftermarket sterndrive

I just came into possession of a 97 Maxum withe 454 Chevy and Bravo 3. The outdrive has obviously been replaced, and I assume it is aftermarket, as it has no serial number in the normal location, and I can’t find any identifying information on it anywhere. Can anyone shed a little light on this...

    U Joint bellows orientation

Yes I did. I have found aftermarket products usually do the job just fine on parts that get changed out frequently anyway. I have deduced from interwebs searching that the flats go forward, left and right.

    U Joint bellows orientation

Hi all, I'm getting ready to install the bellows on alpha1 gen1, and there is no marking on the bellows as to position, as is mentioned in various manuals. I've looked under the clamps, inside and out, nothing. The bellows has two "flats" on it on one end. Are these an indicator of position...

    Alpha1 Gen1 reassembly sequence

Thanks guys. I'm trying to follow the manual, but I'm having a little trouble with how it is sequenced. It seems to be "modular" rather than "serial" in the way it flows. But maybe I need to spend some more time with it. I've done all these tasks more than once over the years, so I'm familiar...

    Alpha1 Gen1 reassembly sequence

After some fitting up, I see that the water hose is easy to manage at this point. I think I see the path forward would be attach bellows and hose to gimbal, then attach hose to bell, assemble bell to gimbal, then finish bellows. Does that sound about right?

    Alpha1 Gen1 reassembly sequence

Another question about the "putting it back together" thing. I currently have everything off the boat. I have done some freshening up of the upper and lower gear housings, and reassembled the power unit. The transom assembly is off the boat. The bell housing is removed. Gimbal bearing is...

Alpha 1 gen 1 water hose

It looks to me like the reason you get two in the kits is to provide both the 5/8 and 3/4 inch versions. Both of these hoses are listed as provided in the kit mentioned. Only the 3/4" hose is preformed. I think I'm gonna stay with the 5/8" hose. I just don't like the sloppy fit of the 3/4.

Alpha 1 gen 1 water hose

Hi everyone, Does anyone know if there is a pre-formed version of the 5/8" gen-1 transom-to-bell housing hose available anywhere? I have the 3/4" preformed hose but I think it's really for Gen2, and I don't like the idea of squishing it down that much with hose clamps. I also have the straight...

    Seal orientation

Ah, yes, now it looks like I can get there. I forgot I am running a VPN that sometimes interferes with things. thanks, k

    Seal orientation

Yes, unfortunately, I have an old Seloc manual. I can't seem to get to any of the links people have sent for the Merc manual. My computer is a little over-protective at times.

    Seal orientation

Clearly I need to get my hands on a newer manual. But this one agrees with my manual on this point. Thanks for the info.

    Seal orientation

Hi all, I’ve searched the forum and found one or two related posts, but I’m still confused on this. I’m replacing the seals in the upper housing on my alpha 1 gen 1. My manual (which is really for R/MR, up to 1983) says that the lower seal should have a lip facing toward the driven gear - in...

    Hunting for Gen 1 SN

That is why I disassembled it - it was extremely tight. I’m amazed the bearings look as good as they do. It’s a gen 1. I am original owner - well it was originally my dad but I’ve done the maintenance (unless he had stuff done while I wasn’t looking). I have new bearings coming. But now it...

    Hunting for Gen 1 SN

Thanks. All the references I read say it’s on the stb side, which is why I scraped off the decal on that side. Dang.

    Hunting for Gen 1 SN

Hi all, I've been hunting for the serial number on my Alpha1 gen1. I've read all the guides that say there's a tag somewhere on the upper gear housing. I have found nothing. My ultimate reason for trying to track it down is that I understand there was a change in how the input (yoke) bearing...
