    How to lube 280 gimbal.

I can see a brass tube with a brass cap on the top of the bell housing but no zerk to attach a gun. Just the bare threaded tube when I unthread the cap. How do I force grease down the tube? Is there a special fitting?

    Aq 120b carb help.

I have a bayliner explorer with an AQ120B that I have totally rebuilt. I cleaned ouy the Solex 44 phn3 carb and am able to get the engine to idle well but it slowly dies if I bring the revs above 1500. Starts right up again without having to give it a shot from the accelerator pump. I have...

    black max oil alarm module.

I have a late 80's black max that started beeping when running. Found a replacement but the color and length of the wires is different. I believe that the original module was 41470a3 but the one that I got to replace it I believe is a 41470a12. I was led to think that this would work but need...

    86 Merc 115 inline 6 has a groove in #6

I have a deep groove running most of the way down my #6 cylinder. Is is very big and maybe 3/16" wide and looks like it was machined in. Is this normal and if so what is it for? Compression was fine in that hole ~125psi

    898 died

I have recently rebuilt this 898 and added center rise manifolds. I now have them plumbed for "cold manifold" but they still get very hot. Anyways I had finally put the 10 hours breakin time on it without any real issues other than the manifolds getting very hot. The temp gauge says 165 and...

    898 log manifold conversion

I want to convert an 898 to center rise aqua power manifolds. I have tried to use the existing tstat housing with 3 outlets per side and plumbed the new manifolds to flow kind of like the log ones did except from low back to high front with solid riser gaskets and the riser being fed by the...

    High Voltage!

So I went to Wallyworld and got one of their marine heavy duty starting/deep cycle type 27 batteries because it was a great deal for such a large well built battery. My 9 year old Crappy Tire deep cycle was finally starting to fail to start my 86 115. I know the battery is fully topped up at...

    86 115hp excess carbon on #1

I dumped my autolube and always run premix so my plugs tend to run a little on the oily side. New buhw's after 1 tank of gas shows lots of dry carbon collecting on only the top plug. The others are oily but no carbon build up. New impeller and strong telltale... Is this normal? Cheers!

    '86 inline 6 115hp Water intrusion into #4

Slowly lost 10lbs compression in #4 over the last few seasons on my 1986 115. Just installed fresh plugs and ran a 6 gal tank through it, pulled plugs and can see that #4 is milky with actual water droplets on it! Where could this water be coming from? Its never been overheated since its was...

    '86 115 rusting plugs

I clean my plugs after every outing and I have noticed that all of my plugs except the lowest, #6 have nice clean porcelains but rusty electrodes. (surface gap). Now I understand that usually, the bottom seal lets go and causes water intrusion in #6 but obviously this is not the case with mine...

    Bottom engine swivel mount.

My 86 115 elpto has always been somewhat loose at the bottom of the swivel pin. I always assumed it was a worn out bushing but after having a closer look, it seems the the swivel shaft has minimal play inside the transom assembly but the iron yoke that bolts to the leg has a lot of play on the...

The need to search for 3 digit terms.

I think that the ability to search for topics based on engine hp would be a great benefit to users and I can't understand why the system is set up to not allow search terms shorter than 4 characters long. Please allow shorter terms. Cheers!

    3.0L closed manifold cooling

My friend has a shot 90's 3.0L merc that he wants to repower with an omc 3.0L. The merc has a good manifold and riser but is raw water cooled. The omc is fresh water cooled but has a bad riser. The obvious solution to me would be to swap the omc riser with the merc but he tells me that there is...

    Rebuild a power pack

So with winter here and my boats all out of the water I want a project to entertain myself for a few months. I have always been miffed at mercury for building these unreliable and unserviceable power packs and charging me a fortune to replace the entire unit when in fact only 1 channel has gone...

Should iBoats have a new section for high performance?

After reading with dismay on other boating forums about how speed enthusiasts sneer at the "must be by the book" advice found on iBoats, I believe that there should be a new section devoted to improving performance from your inboard/outboard. The merc/volvo section is fine if you just want the...

    Merc Stays in gear!!!

I have a '78 898 with a pre alpha. I have replaced the lower shift cable and installed a stiffer sping in the shift interrupt system and verified that the cutout switch works properly. Running more than 1 battery

Here is a proposed system using 2 or 3 batteries. Please critique it for flaws. I have all the components already. I think it is bullet proof in that switching to off while charging should not blow the charging system. Starting is always from the starting battery no matter which way the...
