The iboats forum moderators are excited to announce that at this time it appears the iboats forums posting pictures function is working once again. Though we cannot promise for how long, we're hoping for indefinitely.
A bit of an update. I found the source of the oil leak. It was motor oil leaking around the oil filter gasket. The filter was tight, but I took it off, inspected the gasket (found nothing wrong), cleaned and reinstalled and now it's fine.
I also changed the gear lube in the lower unit. I've had...
I finally solved this one, so I thought I'd put a bow on it in case someone else has the same problem. I replaced the electronic module and pick-up coil in the distributor and now it runs like a champ. I think it was temperature affecting the module, but hard to tell since I swapped two parts at...
No lube reservoir, fresh water and compression is between 160 and 170 on all cylinders. I checked compression with the throttle closed, so that might go up a little if done correctly.
I'm leaving town for a week, so it'll be a while before I'm able to spend more time on this. I'll circle back...
Thanks to all for the quick responses. Looks like I've got some things to check out.
Scott, my engine oil is clean, clear and still up at the full mark on the dipstick. I had also placed a large piece of paper in the bilge under the engine to see if any drips materialize. It came out clean...
I replaced the manifold gasket because I thought it was leaking (sucking air). That may or may not have been the case. Still chasing that one down.
My engine oil is clean. No water is getting in there. It's the gear lube that has issues. The head gasket or the manifold gasket could be the...
My boat has a new problem, or combination of problems I'm hoping to get some thoughts on. 2003 Mercruiser 3.0 with Alpha 1 Gen 2. The boat's new to me (bought it last fall), and the first several times I had it out, the bilge stayed almost completely dry. But when returning from the last couple...
I'm pretty sure I removed the PV and cleaned the passages, but one more time can't hurt. Just for grins, I've ordered a new float (they're relatively cheap). When that gets here I'll check the power valve while I'm installing it.
My ignition is the typical electronic type with single coil and...
Thanks Scott.
The jets were removed and cleaned, and the carb was really pretty clean inside. Unfortunately, I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner, but it may be worth the investment. I've had plenty of opportunities to use one over the years.
The power valve might be worth taking another look...
This thread is getting long, so a quick recap:
1991 Sea Ray 170BRLTD with a Mercruiser 3.0, replaced in 2003. I bought it last fall. It runs great for the first 5 – 10 minutes off the trailer but then starts to bog and pop through the carb intermittently. It seems to be worst at WOT and...
I haven't tried any of these. I'll check the siphon tube this week before I go out again. I actually took a spark tester with me to the lake last weekend but didn't use it. I'll keep it with me in case the problem persists. I'm not sure how I'd hook a spare tank up. I suppose unhook the hose...
It's been a couple of weeks, and I think I've made some progress. Here's what I've done:
Verified that the choke is working properly. It is, maybe opening a bit quicker than it should, but I'll deal with that once the big issues are solved.
I drained the gas out of the fuel filter housing on...
Yup, choke, so no TKS. Fingers are crossed that this is a choke problem, but a compression test is on the list.
Regarding that, can I unplug the coil wire while I crank, or will that damage ignition components? I don't want it to fire while I'm testing, so if there's a better way, I'd be...
Wow! A lot of replies in not a lot of time. Thanks fellas! I’ll try to take them in order.
I’ve got a gap tester, so unless I find a smoking gun I’ll take that with me next time I get it on the water. I’m not sure I can replicate the problem on the hose (no load), but then I haven’t tried...
I have a 2003 MerCruiser 3.0 in a 1991 Sea Ray 170BRLTD. It seems to run well for the first 10 or so minutes, and then progressively gets worse as it warms up. After about 20 minutes it doesn't have enough power to go much over 20 mph. It did this at the end of last season, so when I winterized...
