Need some help on that Gas Guage

1996 Starcraft Fishmaster. Most of the time it reads full, once in awhile it jumps around. Any ideas on where to begin? The tank, the gas guage itself, or both? Thanks for your help whoever comes through.

    Tach/Fuel Gauge Questions

I have a 1996 Starcraft Fishmaster 190. The tach issue is that it always reverts to 1500 RPMs when the ignition turns off. It appears to be accurate at higher RPMs, while running the motor, but kind of erratic at lower rpms. A lot of jumping around in the lower range. The gas guage question...

    2004 Johnson 90 HP

Two questions. Regardless of the type of oil I use, my engine is running way too rich. I've used standard 2 cycle and partial synthetic, several brands. Is there any way to adjust the oil that is automatically delivered from the oil tank? If so, how do I go about it? The other question is...

    Which Gear Oil Weight

I have the 1973 Merc 200 I've been posting about lately. Went to my Merc dealer to get a manual, all out. Does anyone know which weight gear oil I should put in? Any recommendation on the brand? Is the Walmart Supertech worth buying? Thanks guys!

Welch Plug for !973 Merc 200 Carb

Is it mandatory to replace it? The reason I ask, is one did not come with the carb kit even though I thought it would and should. I'm soaking all parts in carb cleaner now. Welch plug is still in place. Any help would be great. At this time I don't have time to order one. Thanks, Marty

Need pictures or explanations of check valve placements

in the fuel pump(I think I'm naming it correctly) of my 1973 Mercury 200 serial # 3316276 Is there a picture or diagram available on the net that could be of help when putting them back into the black plastic housing? I think I've got it, but not so sure. Trying to rebuild it and didn't take...

Transom Bolt ? on my 1972 20 HP Merc

When my 20 Kicker sets on the transom, it sets low to the point that the both T handle knobs won't make a complete turn while I'm trying to tighten it. They hit or bottom out on the aluminum flat part of the boat directly in front of the transom. I don't want to raise the motor, but was...

Mid to Late 20 HP Mercury??

I have an older Mercury, serial # 3316276. Looks to be about a 17 inch shaft. Is there a way to tell the year? Is there a good place to buy a used extension shaft kit? If not used, where would be a good source for a new kit? Would a kit get me down to about 22 inches or so? Is it a big job...

2004 90 HP Johnson 2 stroke starting issues

New plugs, treated the carbs with Johnson spray in carb treatment, not a lot of hours, bought used with the boat. I have experienced erratic starting problems since I've had it these past two years. When it is cold, I can get it to start by choking it, but it doesn't want to keep running. If...

Low Compression in 1 out of 4 cylinders

I have a 1979 Mercury Blueband 50 HP. The previous owner hadn't run it for quite a few years. I got it running, hard starting even after changing plugs. Took it out on the lake. Ran well except for a little rough idling. Ran into a water pumping issue, got it solved with a new impellar...

1979 Blueband 50 HP Impellar Problem?

I recently purchased this motor from a man who hadn't run it for 20 years. Put a new impellar in it as well as new plugs. Took it out on the lake for the first time today. After awhile it fired up and ran fairly well. Good top end, good take off, no bogging down, but a little cough at slow...

    Can't get a forward gear

I have a 1979 50 HP Blue Band 4 cylinder (Ser. # 5445498) with the lower unit dropped for an impellar change and just recently put back on. I can only vouch for the motor running on a stand, never had it on my boat. I put both the shift and throttle cables on properly and can get it to shift...

    Speedometer Tube??

I have a 1979 50 HP Blue Band 4 cylinder (Ser. # 5445498) with the lower unit dropped for an impellar change. At the front of the lower unit there is a plastic hollow threaded cream colored nut, diameter 3/8 inch, hex head with a rubber 1/4 inch tube coming out of the top of that hollow nut...

    Tilt lock pin Assembly

I have a 1979 50 HP Blueband 4 cylinder. I just replaced the impellar and gaskets and a cam that was plastic, but is now metal. The motor is on the boat now. I put the tilt lock pin in the center hole of all the holes and dropped the motor down into it's running position. At this position...

Droppin the lower unit/impella questions, Mercury Blueband

I just recently bought a 78 Mercury 50 HP motor from a neighbor who hadn't run it for 20 years. While searching the web, I found out the first thing to do before taking it out on the water was to change the impellar. I don't have a manual, as I am going to put it on a Gregor and probably sell...

    At Wit's End on Johnson 40 1987?

JTLCUD. I just rebuilt both carbs, and my fuel pump. When I fired it up in the driveway with the water earmuffs, it idled like a champ in and out gear and ran in gear at high rps really well. I took it out on Lake Mead to give it the final test, and wummph! It idles in gear better than...

Starting/Gas Hose Pressure Issues 90HP Johnson

I have a 2004 Johnson, J90GLSR with very low hours on it. It came on a Starcraft Fisherman, 1996, used in Ohio this Spring. It was originally set up for Lake Erie and surrounding lakes. Since purchasing it I have only used it at high elevation lakes. When I last used it at about 8700 feet, I...

    40 HP Johnson rpm problem

J40 TLCUD 1987. At almost all rpm ranges in the throttle, it is necessary for me to use the electronic choke on the key to keep it running at the appropriate rpms If I don't tickle it contstantly, about every 3 seconds or so, the rpms drop dramatically. If I get the timing just right I can keep...
