lower unit o-rings

Over the course of say 2 years, if the o-rings were not put back on the lower unit fill screws, how much water would probably be in the LU? Boat is not docked in water; when boat is in the water, it's in for ~8hrs at a time.

Would the amount of water that would enter via the fill...

Slow to get on plane Black Max 150 fixed!

I had one of the 89 Black Max's that would stumble and not go to full power from a dead stop until the boat was in motion for some time, then it ran fine...

Well, I took the fuel pump apart and the top gasket was broken. All of the diaphrams were very 'stretched out'. The top one...

1996 or 97 Ocean Pro electrical

Otay...my dad has a 96 or 97 ocean pro. He is on his 3RD stator. When the stator blows, the powerpack goes with it.

The mechanic always replaces the stator and powerpacks, but I don't think he's ever tried to figure out why the stator blows in the first place. Thoughts?
<br...

    when changing the poppet assembly...

do you have to remove the lower cowling? Was talking to Merc people and they said you had too. 89 150 Merc.

I am hoping that you don't, and that the assembly slides out, and you slide the new one in...or is it very much difficult than that?

If I can rebuild a fuel pump...

    Stable RPMs?

Should my Merc be completely stable RPMwise? What I mean is, if I've got it going, say 4200 RPM, the tach needle will waver just a bit up or down, between 50-150 RPM or so. Is this normal? If I were 'missing', wouldn't the movement be more than that?

Thanks!

    fuel pump rebuild

Am looking to rebuild my 1989 150's fuel pump. Was looking at it last night.

Am I correct in thinking:

1:cut ty-wraps and remove hoses
2:remove two bolts, lower starboard, and upper port..this will release it from the motor?
3:remove other 2 bolts remaining...

    switchbox

Where is the switchbox located on a 89 150? What does it look like? What are the 6 boxes called that link with the sparkplug cable to the plug?

Thanks!

    Trailer button?

On my Quicksilver throttle control, there is a button on the shaft marked 'trailer'. What does this do?

Ideas needed...89 150 dies sometimes when put into gear

On my 150, sometimes it will, and sometimes it wont, die after a start and shift. If I rev it in neutral to 2000 rpm a couple of times, let it come back to idle, then shift, it does ok. Sometimes it doesn't start right away after fishing, either...have to pump the hot foot.

Also...

    takeoff problems

Would a 1/2 to 3/4 of the way clogged fuel filter (the clear glass kind) cause bogging down out of the hole, but run fine at WOT on plane? With the motor trimmed all of the way down, and if you stomp on it, you only get about 3500-4000 rpms and about a 7-8 sec hole shot. Once it's up, it runs...

Synthetics ok for older non-efi motors?

Is syn lube good for older engines? Have a 89 Merc 150 that has it's oil injection disabled...can you premix this stuff? I take it that you can't mix dino and syn...Just drain the tanks? Do you need to 'flush' the inside of the motor with something to get rid of all traces of dino oil? Are...

    torque trim tab

Noticed yesterday my engine is missing the torque trim tab thing (round disk with tab on lower unit). Is this a neccessary part? It doesn't have any torque steer problems...

    Rooster tail is bad?

This isn't really merc specific, but..

This is my first Trim/Tilt motor...apparently there is a limiter which keeps you from trimming the motor out of the water when running.

If I am running and trim up all the way that the motor will allow, there is about a 4 to 5 ft...

    another stupid decarb question.

Have 89 150 Merc. Runs great..will die occasionally when I put it into gear if it is cold. Anywho...previous owner said it's never had a decarb treatment...is this asking for trouble as it's been 15 years, or should it be done? Motor is in great shape and runs great, and I don't want to mess...

    less problems, or less quantity?

I noticed that there are twice as many questions in the Johnnyrude forums...is this because there are more of them, or do they typically have more problems?

I know around here, all I see is Mercs and Yammys...

    How long should it last?

Anyone know approx how many hours an 89 xr4 150hp engine should last? I know it depends on things, but what the generally accepted wear out point in hours? For instance, the 2-stroke engines on the ultralights I fly can last 1200 hours before rebuild if taken care of, or about 6-700 if abused...

    RPMS take forever to build

Hi again...on my 73 evin 50hp, it has always gotten up to top speed 5500 RPM fairly quickly after getting on plane..now, it will plane out and sit at around 4000 rpm and very slowly will it creep up to full throttle...Motor seems to start fine and idle a little slow, but okay. I had a crack in...

    Is this bad??

Water is coming from the painted pic when running in a barrel...motor runs without a hiccup, and spark plugs are tan and a little oily. Motor does not overheat. Note water is coming from the bottom part of that small cowling rather than where the top meets the bottom (if that matters!)<br...

ok to re-assemble impeller housing w/o sealant

Recently replaced the impeller in my 73 Evinrude Lark 50 hp. Did it all by advice given and read about. Unfortunately, no one told me to put sealant between the pump housing and the plate below the housing. I noticed that some silicone-clear like stuff was there when I removed it, but thought...
