Somehow got water in lower unit (Yamaha 30MLHQ) & subsequent shifting issues after winter storage (didn't do any winter prep). Maybe had something to do with impeller replacement last year using old gaskets. Have damaged lower unit casing ID threads that hold spanner nut for prop shaft...
