1988 Prov150 Impeller replacement questions

Ok, it's time once again to replace the impeller on my 1988 Yammie ProV150 (what a wonderful motor!).

This is my first time doing the work and I have a couple of questions.

First, the grommet, o-ring, and impeller will be replaced, that's a given. If the upper housing is...

HELP, Yammy carb, what float height?

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my carbs and need to know what the float height setting should be. The Clymer guide has a different, single float example and no other specs. My carbs have two floats.

It's a '88 ProV150 V6

Anyone have the specs, or have an idea how to get...

    Float height adjustment needed

My Clymer guide has a completely different carb layout than my '88 yamaha ProV150. For one thing, it shows a single float, but my carb has two.

The height adjustment in the book says 0.5", but I don't believe it. The spec was in the text, and there is no table with other specs.<br...

    HELP: Frozen carb bypass covers!

I'm rebuilding my 3 V6 carbs and I can't get the brass bypass covers off. They are frozen solid. I have new ones in the rebuild kit, so I'd really like to get under them and clean.

They are brass with a huge slot (approx twice the size of a standard flat blade screw driver). However...

    Duel fuel pump test?

I have a 1988 ProV150 with duel fuel pumps. I have tested them blowing and sucking on the inlet and outlet and they seem to be functioning ok.

Is there any way to test that the crankcase port that operates the pump is working ok? I wonder if it's clogged or anything. Alternatively...

    Going to a hotter plug?

Will going to a hotter plug (to a NGK BR7HS-10 from a BR8HS-10, for example) help with an older engine? The Clymer's guide recommends this if the plugs are wet, which mine are (all 6 of them are wet, none more than any other).

Thanks!

Excessive oil in intakes? Low power problem

I saw some oil dripping, slowly, out of my air intake. I pulled the baffle and there was oil on the surface and some slight pooling on the carb intakes.

This is a Yammy ProV150 ('89) with oil injection,
and the oil looked like just oil, not oil/gas mix.

It appears to...

    Carb cleaner

I have seen people recommend dunk tank cleaning of carbs, but my Clymer's Yamaha Outboard Shop Manual says the carbs are coated against porosity
(sp?) and shouldn't be dunked, hot tanked, or sprayed with compressed air above 25psi. Is this true?

Thanks!

Seafoam Deep Creep? Other spray decarb?

It's definitely time to decarb. Is Seafoam Deep Creep a good spray decarb? I mostly see recommendations for additives, not sprays.

Thanks!

Can't install steering ram, move motor?

The continuing steering saga takes a sad turn.

I'am replacing the steering on my 1988 Baja Sunsport 186/Yamaha ProV150. Unfortunately, the distance between the end of the motor pivot tube for the steering ram and the side wall of the engine well is shorter than the ram length! The...

When is it gelcoat vs. glass repair?

I have several gouges in the gelcoat. No fabric is showing, so I assume it's just the gelcoat, however, the surface is black, and the gouge is white, does that mean it's beyond the gelcoat?

Hit a rock last year and I can definitely see fabric on the chine that took the hit. Fabric...

    Replacing steering, Yam 150 OB?

My steering is not at the point where I have to strain to hold it, and turning to port is damn hard.

I have a Baja Sunsport 186 with a Yamaha ProV 150,
both 1988. I would like to get a steering system which will turn easily to both sides.

From what I can tell, my...

'89 Yam 150 power loss when warm

Initial symptoms include loss of power while at WOT, with a marked drop in tone. The boat didn't loose plane and I didn't notice a marked loss of speed however. I remember the RPMs were lower, but not by a lot. When I went to idle, then back to WOT a short while later, the boat wouldn't even...

    Did, but got power loss

I did take it out initially with the old gas (yes, i knew better). Anyway, I ran it around for about 20 minutes or so at cruising rpm and had no problem.

A few days later I took out some friends and we left the dock (w/ 3 adult men) just fine. About a minute out I noticed a...

    Fuel additive for Yamaha ProV150?

I am recomissioning my boat with a ProV150. I hasn't been run for over a year. Is there something I can use to clean out the fuel system (a fuel additive, etc.)? I'd like to make sure all the gum, resedue, etc. is cleaned out as much as possible (without a full service tune up, which costs a...

    Yamaha ProV150 plugs: NGK B8HS vs. B8HS-10

I can get NGK B8HS plugs locally, but the ones listed for the motor are B8HS-10. According to the NGK part number decoder, the -10 just means the gap (1.0mm). THey don't say what it means when no dash follows the part number.

The B8HS is the same, which means the size, heat and...
