    It is to drain water from the shift shaft area of the lower unit. Keep it open, especially in freezing areas.

    That's exactly the way I start my 850. Once warmed up, it starts with just a quick hit of starter. 👍

    My 850, 4 cyl didn't have a timing bracket/pointer. I placed a dial indicator in #1 sparkplug hole to determine TDC then made a pointer to align with decal.

    May be a replacement carb. Some boats may have vacuum gauges.

    I'm sorry to read of the loss. Tough to lose projects that take hours of enjoyment with them. Tool loss can be a major loss also. I have a list of tools with replacement values. Sadly, it needs updated. I would suggest an inventory list to all. You'll be surprised of the "New" cost value.

    I have three old Mercs, 1960 (300) 1965 (650) and 1975 (850). They all seem to have different Thrust washers. OP definitely had wrong one. You should be able to tighten the prop nut completely without locking up.

    Be VERY CAREFUL with the rotor. It doesn't come off the shaft.

    Last year someone posted a long but detailed description with photos of this repair. Involved digging, out the potting material to solder new wires. Maybe a little searching with keywords will find it.

    I'd suggest you put multimeter across battery terminals and check voltage while cranking.

    I'm just throwing this in the mix. I have Mercury's both 4 cyl 2 stroke. The idle speed is set by TIMING.
