Winterizing a Merc A1-G1 Block Question Antifreeze

So does West Marine (-100 burst protection, -50 freeze protection) and Sierra PG automotive antifreeze which you can mix up to whatever strength you need, I mix mine to -30*F. both non-toxic & both have corrosion inhibitors. BTW I have done this each winter for 20 years, boat is used 100% in...

Is There a Repair Kit for Corrosion on the Gymbal Housing?

Aluminum is pretty soft, I would ask around, a place that fixes lower units might be able to do it. And then it's done right the first time.

Winterizing a Merc A1-G1 Block Question Antifreeze

You can though it might be mixed in with some dingy bilge water and motor oil drips lol. Might try it next spring. clean bilge out, drain then put plug in drain af, then remove plug and put AF back in containers.

Winterizing a Merc A1-G1 Block Question Antifreeze

If you're going to use AF, the way to do it is to use non-toxic Propylene Glycol with corrosion inhibitors. If you use toxic Ethylene Glycol that's going to be spilling all over your driveway when you start up in spring.

2006 Monterey Boat with a 4.3L Mercruiser TKS Engine S/N 0w354897 Mysterious Loss of Power

I would check all electronic components and the coil. Measure resistances cold & hot. Compare to factory specs. Electronics & could can break down with heat. I would also check the 2 remaining parts of the fuel system; the anti siphon valve. These can get clogged with debris. Then there’s the...

Is There a Repair Kit for Corrosion on the Gymbal Housing?

Glad my lil trick worked for you! Looking at the extent of it, I agree with Scott, I'd get it welded, one-and-done

Is There a Repair Kit for Corrosion on the Gymbal Housing?

Ok I’ll try to explain my work around for this…when I replaced the bellows I removed the pivot housing. There’s a way to do it without disconnecting the shift cable at the pivot. What I did was disconnect it at the engine bracket and I put tape on the the adjustable barrel to keep that setting...

Is There a Repair Kit for Corrosion on the Gymbal Housing?

That's what I thought...looking at it, that appears to be the result of water laying in the D/S bellows and getting under the edge of it and corroding the aluminum there. You have a couple of choices, changing that housing involves pulling the engine so that's not a great option for you I'm...

Is There a Repair Kit for Corrosion on the Gymbal Housing?

Post up pix of the damage, so we can see what you're dealing with....Some have used JB Weld, I have heard the best epoxy for those repairs is Belzona, but it is very expensive.

    Pre engine pull, winterization

Ok when I had leaky head gaskets that put a bit of water into #2 cyl and just a trace in #1, I did have spark plugs with that orange cast to them, and there was a bit of rust on the electrodes. However, the only way to tell for sure I think is an oil analysis, if salt water is getting in a few...

    Mercruiser 2.5 or 3.0 winterization

West Marine has a good article on how to choose the right antifreeze for winterizing based on the lowest temp anticipated in your climate…I used to use their -100 but now mix my own Sierra PG antifreeze using a refractometer. It’s cheaper & just as good & can actually be used as an engine...

repowering 2006 Chaparral volvo 5.7 with stroker.

No in salt that won’t destroy the motor unless you neglected the manifolds/elbows. We routinely get 1500 hrs or more here in the salt

    The End

I haven't used our snow blower in 3-4 years. This is why I started draining the tank and carb bowl, and I do that on all my power equipment that has a bowl type carb. Less problems that way.

    The End

My F/W is winterized, the outdrive is off and in the garage, but I still have my 2 Walker bay dinghies on the beach (they stay there all the time) and my little Suzuki DF2.5 is ready to go!

    5.7L Cam Choice

    1) the 1985 GM (Chevrolet) block is a 2 piece rear main seal, vs the 1986 and newer 1986 and up one piece main seal. When they went to the one piece the flywheel changed, and I don't think your coupler (Merc or Volvo) will work with the 2 piece style rear main flywheel. So you have to check on...

A nice tip but it’s not about stern drive storage in the up position

If it ain't broke....keep on rockin' it isn't that bad of a job as long as the end cap will come off, I used a bit of heat and constant pressure on the pin wrench.

A nice tip but it’s not about stern drive storage in the up position

The advice I have read said that if you leave it full up don’t leave it fully up against the upper limit because that can cause the check valves in the pump to stick.

I used the one that you refill the drive from.

Can I Tell if Water is Getting into the U-Joint Bellows?

Unfortunately there’s no way to know if it’s going to leak. While it can be a pain that’s why pulling the drive at the end of each season helps to make everything last longer.

A nice tip but it’s not about stern drive storage in the up position

I just rebuilt my trim rams this spring, one started leaking a bit the year before, I was shocked how long they lasted. The BRP kits are about $50 for each cyl, if the end caps come out off easily you can leave the trim rams on the transom mount no need to disturb the hydraulic line fittings. If...
