I have a 1989 40hp nissan the gets a little too hot. It pee's water very well. Before I replace the impeller, do you think it could be the thermostat??

I bought a 40hp nissan, got it running My question is I have two extra wires. A yellow/black one and a black one. Anyone have any ideas what they are for? I am working on taking some pictures of them. Thanks for your help.
