    1970 1150 fuel starvation issue

My 1150 inline six (with two mechanical fuel pumps) seems to have gotten worse over the last few weeks on a fuel starvation issue. Right now, if I can get the boat running at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, it will run all day, but the trouble is getting it going. I can pump the fuel bulb and it will get...

    Hub question for new prop

I just picked up a Michigan Wheel Vortex prop on clearance (pn 992106). I'm installing it on a 1970 Mercury 115 outboard. It calls for Michigan Wheel's hub kit #102, but I'd have to mail order that. Can anyone tell me if the Mercury hub kit (835257q1) will work in this prop or whether I have...

Carburetor Adjusting -- Which way is lean?

Working on my 1970 1150, still trying to get it to ilde properly messing around with the idle/air screws. The books say that turning the air idle screw counter clock wise richens the carbs while turning the screw clockwise leans the mixture. Some of the posts I've seen has it opposite. Can...

Dying going into gear 1970 1150 Inline 6

I finally have my powerhead back and installed. New fuel pump membranes, rebuilt carbs, new rings, etc. Its running at idle very well, but going into gear it dies. The idle adjustment screws on the carbs are at the recommended 1-3/4 turns out from lightly seated. I'm running premixed fuel at...

Mixing Power Port and Standard Pistons

I am repairing my power head. Had to bore cylinder #1 .015 over. My replacment piston on my 1150 has the big hole in it perpendicular to the wrist pin. I presume this is a power port piston. Can/should it be mixed with 5 standard, non power ported pistons (pistons with no holes in them)...

    Overbored Piston Weight

I'm replacing one piston in my 1970 1150 (inline 6 cylinder). I went for a .015 over piston on cylinder 1 and the machine shop guy ordered me one from ProMarine.com. It is their part no. 9015. I read on this board that ProMarine's pistons are made by the same aftermarket manufacturer as...

Wiseco oversized pistion in Inline 6

I read in older posts to stay away from Wiseco pistons. My machine shop guy ordered me a .015 over pistion from (I believe) Wiseco, PN 9015. The weight seems heavier than the other pistons, but I'll check it on a scale later. What are the reasons (if any) to avoid Wiseco pistons? Should I...

Moving Pee Hole in Inline 6 (1150 1970)

I've got a 1150 from 1970 where the #1 cylinder overheated because the prior owner ran it with a bad impeller. In pulling off the water cover jacket, it is obvious that the #1 cylinder doesn't get nearly as much water as the lower cylinders. I saw in one of the old posts where one guy was...

    Inline 6 Rebuild Question

When rebuilding these engines, do you guys replace the needle bearings on the connecting rods AND the needle bearings on the wrist pin? Is there any reason to remove the pistons from the connecting rods or just replace the pistons without taking out the wrist pin? Thanks, Jim

How much piston scoring requires piston replacment?

This is on my inline 6 1150. Some of the pistons have some scoring on them. For you guys that rebuild these, how much is acceptable before the piston needs replaced? Thanks.

    1150 Powerhead Rebuild Questions

My 1970 1150 turned out to have bad compression in cylinder #1, a result of a bad impeller, block cooling passage ways and/or running lean on carb 1. I pulled the powerhead apart and that piston was melted. I'm having that cylinder rebored for the .015 oversized pistion. I have some...

1970 1150 Distributor Coil Wire - trick for removal?

I'm trying to remove the distributor, but I don't know how the coil wire is supposed to disconnect. Before I break anything, I thought I'd ask. It is my understanding that the coil and spark plug wires somehow screw into the distributor. Is this right? If so, where (how) do I remove the coil...

    1150 (1970) Carb Removal

My top carb is peeing out fuel with the motor running, so it needs a rebuild. I'm going to do all three while I am at it. I'm looking for some advice, words of wisdom, etc. for removing these carbs. Any tricks or things to watch out for? I am particualrly concerned about getting the...

Looking for Water Pump Kit Part Number- Model 1150 from 1970

I'm looking for the part number for the water pump rebuild kit that will fit my 1150 (115hp inline 6 cyl) from 1970. Serial number begins 2836XXX (I dont remember the last digits - i'm not being secretive). I've called a couple of places including iboats and I'm getting told different part...

1150 Mercury Lower End Removal - couple of issues

Looks like I'm in for dropping the lower end on my Merc 1150, 115hp inline 6 from 1970. First, I have no water coming out of the pee hole when I use the ear muffs. Second, the oil that I drained out of it looks like hair conditioner, so I am assuming that it is emulsified because water got to...

    Help with trim - 115hp 1970

I've got a brand new used 1970 115hp (inline 6 cylinder - 1150 model) that I'm trying to get ready for summer. There are a number of issues and I'm sure that I'll be posting about them, but right now, I'd like to get the trim working. My dashboard has three trim buttons, one of which is a...
