    Intermittent starting problems

I replaced my 8 year old battery this spring and since then have had intermittent problems starting the boat ( 2006 Mariah SX20 with the 5.0 L fuel injected mercruiser.) I cleaned off the connections to the battery and they seem to be good. What happens is that when I turn the ignition key...

My first launch of the season was Saturday.

There is always a little trepidation with the first launch of the season. Even though the boat was winterized, covered and stored in a shed, there is always the question as to whether everything will work like it did last fall. Saturday was sunny and 80 degrees though the water was still in...

Last week's CarTalk puzzler answer. Bogus or not?

It involved reworking an engine to make it run backwards for use in a twin engine boat so that the propellers would rotate in opposite directions. It sounded bogus to me since it would be much easier to accomplish that via the transmission.

    Hard to start 5.0 MPI

The last couple of times out it has been really hard to get my 2005 5.0 MPI motor started. It cranks a long time before catching and then stalls when put in gear and is again hard to start. Once I get it over to the dock and can let it warm up there are no further issues the rest of the day...

    Depth sounder problem

My depth sounder works fine until the boat gets on plane, then it just displays the last preplane reading. When it comes off plane it reads fine again. It worked well until recently and is more of an issue with the low lake levels we currently have. What's going on with it?

    Some Savannah River Info

The trip from Augusta to Savannah is usually done with PWC's or canoes. You can put in below the navigation lock and dam southeast of Augusta. There are about 200 miles of meandering flatwater down to Savannah. A good part of the South Carolina river banks are restricted due to the Savannah...

First day out this year was a good one.

I picked the boat up from the shed, topped off the trailer tires and gassed it up. It was a short trip to the boat ramp and an easy launch except that my middle daughter helpfully pulled the kill lanyard loose, hung it back and didn't mention it. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out...

    Hard steering Alpha 1

It seems to take a lot of force to steer my boat. It's like trying to steer a full sized 60's car with no power steering around a parking lot. I don't think it was always this hard, but I'm not 100% sure. Does this level of force sound reasonable? The steering fluid is full.

Trailer brakes siezed at boat ramp

We had a nice day at the lake and got ready to pull the boat out. I pulled my truck and trailer around and got ready to back down the ramp but the trailer would not budge. I could neither move forward or reverse. The trailer has electrically actuated hydraulic disc brakes. Disconnecting the...
