    Oil bath in starter motor

    I have just stripped a 2006 Mercury starter. It has/had four brass bushes that revolved the armature using a flat plate rather than the rounded with carbon brushes. What seems strange to me is that the insided is drenched in a black smelly oil ! Anyone know if this is normal?
