Thanks for the help. 1974 Merc. on Youtube

Gained alot of knowledge from the forum, got the 1974 Merc. 500 50hp up and running. A Seloc manual is a MUST. Take it to bed and read it front to back more than once. My $800.00 Whaler and Merc. outboard turned out to be a pretty good buy. 1 switchbox and 1 key switch did the trick. See it at...

    1974 Merc 500 carb question

Changing carb jets for altitude change: Can I replace the .063 seal level-4000' jets, and put in .061 4000' to 7000' jets, and still have the engine run here at sea level? I plan to take the boat to higher elevation (4300') in Idaho permanently in Oct. and just wanted to finish up work on it...

    1974 500 50 hp" alternator flywheel " vs " alternator-stator flywheel "

1974 500 50 hp" alternator flywheel " vs " alternator-stator flywheel " I see by looking at the wiring diagrams for the Thunderbolt sytems, that my 1974 Merc. has a "alternator flywheel" . It's the Type II system. All the other systems: Type I, III, IV, and Type V have stators under the...

Type A carbs/ correct jet for elevation/ how important?

1974 Merc 50Hp with Type A carbs. This motor is currently a sea level. Seloc manual says .063 jet for 0'-4000'. .063 jet for 4000' to 7000'. This motor will be spending the rest of its days in Idaho, at 4300' on American Falls Res. Is the jet size VERY crirical to get it to run at elevation...

    1970 Mercury 500 switchbox installation

The previous owner had removed the switchbox, sent it in as a core and got a "new" switchbox. He said spark was intermittent. Good spark at first crank, then nothing. He never installed the switchbox, but wire leads are all labeled. Any harm in installing the new switchbox and firing this motor up?

Will 1970 Merc 500 run without the rectifier?

I have just picked up a 1970 Mercury 500 50 hp . Can I run it without the rectifier? I believe the rectifier just switches voltage from AC to DC for battery charging? If my rectifier is bad, will it have an effect on the engine operation other than not charging the battery? Do I leave it wired...

1978 85Hp water pressure gauge install

Just replaced my thermostats and impeller, was thinking about a head temp gauge, (warning horn works fine) but it looks like a water pressure gauge is a better way to go? I can't find any tech info on the correct pressure gauge that hooks to tell tale water outlet. Anyone have a part number that...

    1978 85hp water flow question

I got into some shallow "dirty water" and the overheat alarm sounded. I shut it off IMMEDIATELY and ran home on my Honda kicker. Now, the alarm will sound after engine sits at idle for 10-12 minutes. Sometimes it will idle for 30 minutes before alarm sounds. Don't want to try it at running...

    1978 85hp Johnson - 1970 115 Evinrude - interchangeable?

My current 1978 Johnson 85 hp is running fine. I picked up a 1970 Evinrude 115 hp powerhead, completely rebuilt, which I thought I would keep for a changeout if my 85 blew something. They look identical except for the ignition wiring. A few questions: 1. Will the 155 match up to the pattern on...

    85 Johnson Javelin

I just purchased 16ft. Whaler with a 85 Johnson Javelin outboard. The engine cover says "85 Javelin" Runs fine and all but has nothing to tell me the engine water temp. Is there a place to install a gauge or high temp warning on this engine? Model # 85ETLR78C Ser# J4964175 What year is this...
