Merc 115 stalls. Fuel gauge reads empty, but is full.

So I wonder. Our 2008 Merc 115 OB with 169 hours stalled as we approached the dock to reload. The fuel gauge went to empty (was 3/4 full). Turned out the fuel line basically disintegrated and the fragments clogged the filters. My question: did the fuel gauge drop to empty as an indicator...

Pop-up ads on iBoats. Is it just me, or ...

... does anyone else find them quite irritating on the various subforums? Thought I'd learn to live with them, but not yet. Just asking.

    To Minnesota boaters with trailers

Sorry if this has already been posted, but I learned a little more about the new law passed in Minnesota effective this past July 1st regarding those who trailer their boats. What I already knew was that there is now a law that all lake water must be drained from the boat after it has been...

    Oops! There goes the net.

A few years ago my son got me a nice fishing net with rubber netting and a telescoping pole. The longer pole is nice since our boat has a pretty decent freeboard. Anyway, I'm bringing this fish in near the stern and he gets out the net. It's one of those where you push in a button on the...

Gulf oil spill and outboard motors

Please forgive me if this has been asked before; I couldn't find it. This question exposes my total ignorance in these matters, but when I see video of outboard boats in gulf waters with oil sheen floating on top I can't help but wonder how that oily water doesn't clog up the cooling passages...

Fishfinder using transducer on trolling motor

Our Minn Kota PowerDrive V2 has a built-in transducer and wiring to hook up a separate sonar unit. I'm curious how much current the new sonar would draw from the two 12-volt battery system used to power the trolling motor, or is it anything I should even be concerned about?

    Checking oil level 115hp 4-stroker

Regards 2008 Merc 115hp 4-stroke. Last year it used less than 1/2 quart of oil. Had it winterized by dealer immediately before putting it in storage, which included oil and filter change. Got boat out of storage last week. Checked oil dipstick and it was only 1/3 up from lower hash mark...

    Happy Lund owner

Just a quick note to say I brought "Sweetheart" home from storage and she is now in our garage. 2008 Lund 1750 Fisherman w/115hp Merc 4-stroke and Shorelandr' trailer. Immediately before she went into storage last November I took her back to the selling dealer for winterizing. They always do...

Finally. New "quiet" garage door opener.

Just installed a new Chamberlain Whisper Quiet belt-drive garage door opener. It was on sale this week at the local home store. Wow, what a nice improvement. We have a tuckunder garage, so noise from our previous opener would resonate throughout the bedrooms above. Another neat feature is...

What if batt dies and need to trim motor?

If the battery dies and you need to trim the motor up, is there some kind of manual override for it? We're talking about a Merc 115hp 4-stroke outboard that weighs 400 lbs. If no manual override, is it possible to connect one of the two on-board trolling motor batteries to the dead battery...

Depth on sonar flashes. Wonder why.

Our Lowrance LMS 520C is a combo GPS/Sonar unit. Sometimes the depth reading will start to flash and continue that way for two minutes or more at the same reading while the boat is still moving (and the depth is changing). Happens when under main power or trolling. Eventually, it will snap...

    Interesting outing last night

So my son, wife and I go fishing on the boat last night at nearby lake. Weather was perfect with temps in the 70s and little wind. There were a couple of other boats we could see, one towing a tube and the other a skiier. The kids on the tube were sure having fun! My wife just wanted to sit...

Your Experience: Where do you set your sonar's sensitivity for lake fishing?

We have a Lowrance GPS/sonar combo unit. Just curious. Do you use "auto sensitivity" or do you manually set it? If manual, at what percent do you set it and why? Thanks. -Ken

    Sears rebate policy; amended report.

Recently I posted a rant about how Sears had changed their policy in June of rebating the cost of delivery and haul away of appliances from a cash refund to a store credit in the form of a Sears gift card. I understand now that the policy is not a gift card, but a Mastercard debit card that...

Blew it. I could just die!

So my son and I are fishing on a lake new to us this morning. He had all the bites. Once he snagged a nice bass, but when it jumped in the air the lure popped out. A few minutes later I noticed a dorsal fin curve up and then down from the top of the water. Then I saw a very large turtle swim...

Breakaway cable on trailers with surge brakes

A while back I authored a post regarding heat that I could feel on the outside of the trailer wheels. At first I thought it might be the bearings, but then after towing a few more times I determined it must be the brakes. Sometimes the wheels were warm or even hot, sometimes they're weren't...

    New Sears policy

For years I've gotten various appliances from Sears. A while back they started a policy where they would rebate the delivery and haul-away charges in the form of a check. Kind of irritating, but it worked. Today I bought a new dryer with delivery set for Monday (today is Friday). Pretty good...

Wheels: how hot is too hot?

We stopped at just past the halfway point on our 210 mile trek to let our golden retrievers out for a break, and I did the traditional walk-around-the-rig routine. I put my hand on the left trailer hub and it sure seemed hot. Not scalding hot, but hot enough that I couldn't keep my hand on it...

    How are boat batteries grounded?

Just a curious question. We have an aluminum boat with an outboard engine. Is the ground for the electrical system on the block of the outboard? Or is there a separate grounding block somewhere inside the boat? Or ?? Thanks. - Ken

Shower valve repair - fixed - Thanks!!

This is for you plumbing experts out there. We bought our home new 34-years ago. The shower in the master bath has one of those valves you pull to turn on and rotate from side to side to control the temperature. I used it this morning, turned it off, and while I was using a squeege to clean...
