    Mercury 500 starts in neutral with prop that spins

    Upon starting my merc 500 in the neutral position. the prop spins and i can hear grinding in the gearcase. I must push the throttle forward slightly to stop this. How and what do I do to fix this?

    1976 Mercury 500 50 hp flywheel key replaced now timing points needs to be done.

    My motor would not catch even when I was sure fresh gas was running though the carb. So I new the timing was off. This happened to me before so I had a look at the flywheel key and shure enough! sheared! Replaced that flywheel key and the timing belt while I was at it. Now comes the problem . I...
