I just bought a 1982 4.5hp Johnson, that has seen very little use. It still looks like a new motor. I was told that it was overheating, and needed an impeller.
I took the bottom end off, .... checked them impeller, ... it is perfect. I reassembled it, making sure to put the tube in the water...
