    Tach gray wire short?

cfauvel, I see in the wiring diagrams that most of the outboards have terminal strips like your engine has. For whatever reason on my engine (v4 60 degree) they don't show it on the wiring diagrams and instead show a "connector". Go figure!

    Tach gray wire short?

I want to thank everyone for their feedback! Chris1956 your comment about the wiring harness having not just the pre-wired OMC System Check connector but also free gray, black, and purple wires with ring connectors saved the day. I had bundled all extra wires together under the dash and the...

    Tach gray wire short?

Thanks for that clarification, Crhis1956! I do still have the old VR and I already put it back in since the old and the new VR gave similar voltage results when tested, and both failed to make the tach work! I will keep the new one until the tach works, though, just in case!

    Tach gray wire short?

Thank you cfauvel. I did not think that same gray wire from the vro ran the tach, but the wiring diagram does show that the two gray wires (one to vro, one to tach) are connected using a "connector". I was thinking either the vro was grounding it out, or the "connector" was grounding it out...

    Tach gray wire short?

Thanks Chris1956! I did not realize there are also 3 ring terminals for a standard tach under the dash. I have been under there a fair amount and don't recall seeing extra wires hanging down but I also wasn't really looking for a free wire (I was focusing on the 8 pin plug on the tach). If they...

    Tach gray wire short?

Thanks but I have the diagram. But it does not indicate how or if the gray wire should be grounded. It just shows the tach gray sender wire tied into the gray wire going to the vro. It does not show what kind of connection it is.

    Tach gray wire short?

I have a 1999 90hp v4 60 degree Johnson. A while back the tach stopped working so I replaced it. Still didn't work. So I replaced the rectifier/regulator. Still nothing. All system check lights come on when I turn the key to on, and the tach needle goes to zero. I tested the two yellow wires...
